Il Cammin del Misultin

I’m Francesco, I’m 24 years old and I’m a communication
design student @ Politecnico di Milano.
In these university years I developed different competences:
latest by importance are interaction design, digital strategy,
data visualization. The common field is a constant research in
thinking methods of communication.
I’m self-taught for lot of softwares (Adobe Suite), in the
last months I’m trying to learn programming (HTML, CSS,
Javascript) and everything that can improve my skills.

Il cammin del misultin
Thesis’ project developed for the ADI’s contest Design for
food and local heritage in collaboration with EXPO 2015
in Milan, whose topic was to design innovative practices
for food consumption which could gave value to Italian
tradition’s products.
Il Cammin del Misultin wants to revaluate a storic fish of
Como’s tradition, the missoltino, now almost disappeared
due to strict environmental standards and low interest
compared to other kitchen products.
The project act on two sides: the gastronomic one, which
is focussed on a careful analysis of new culinary trends,
like the practice of street food, is about the setting-up
of an apecar where new recipes with missoltino can be
prepared for a typical on the road consumption.
The second one is about the territory, the cities of the
lake where the tradition was born. A new urban furniture
system would be placed here, giving the opportunity to
consume the recipes in the beautiful places where they
belong.

Behold
This is the first interaction design project. The purpose of
the course was to develop an app which worked among
the trading processes, that are totally transformed by new
technologies.
If digital technologies is deleting the physical mechanism of
selling and buying, the challenge is to design a service that
revalue the importance of physical trades between people.
The application must inspire new behavior and new access
to information: the research is about investigate the context,
comprehend necessities and goals, develop interfaces and
innovative experiences.

Leica community

Buyers

The purpose of the app is to improve the trade experience of Leica
cameras and equipments.
Behold wants to reunite the strong community to the german brand,
which now is lost in obsolete forums.
The medium around which we build the community will be the
users’ projects. Through projects users can discover the camera
which create that work and so the authors.
The concept of the service is to change the relationship between
buyers and sellers: the value of a product is not only about the
product itself (like in the most common C to C’s websites) but also
about the pictures that the camera made.
Design for a community means give more value to the peculiar
things which distinguished one product from another: Leica
cameras, which are keeped in a very intimate way, become
the vehicle that brings the story of the owner, made of travels,
memories and secrets.

Database research

It’s not so isis
This is the first part of a three-phases project for the final
synthesis course.
The aim of the project is to investigate a social phenomenon
such as terrorism through official databases.
We had to find and collect data from official sources
relevant to the topic (open data from governments, scientific
papers, etc…) so we could get a first grasp of the depth and
complexity of this issue.
The ability was to find and choose database, then show them
through a reportage in a one-page website.
In our case we decided to focus on terrorist groups, finding
which core sources inspired them (ethnical, political or
religious purpose). Then we developed the analysis by
different subjects: the places where terrorists hit, the victims
and the media news coverage for each groups.
The reportage show how much terrorism is complex:
every point of view show different aspects of the problem,
sometimes very far from western stereotype.

The databases used for this project are the Global Terrorism Database and the BAAD (Big, Allied and Dangerous).
Togheter this two data source gave us enough inforations to complete the research. The finale datbase is composed
by all the terrorist’s attack from 1998 to 2016. The variables relative to each attack are:

Places
The research investigates three main aspects of terrorism:
geographical settings, groups and victims. In the first part we tried
to layout an overall view about the terroristic attacks distribution
from 1998 to 2015 all over the world, always focusing on the amount
of victims and on the three different origin points.

Groups
Terrorist groups cover a central role in the phenomenon,
representing one of the main aspects of terrorism. We analysed
the deadliest groups, in order to understand how much a specific
ideological source is dangerous in terms of attacks and victims.

22

23

Victims
The amount of victims throughout the years brought terrorism to be
considered as a terrifying global danger.
The following analysis shows different aspects about the victims of
terrorism, such as quantity, typology, nationality, social identity.

Media reactions
During the analysis process, we investigated the official version of
the phenomenon through data. We asked ourselves if the official
version reflected exactly what we know about this phenomenon.
We often know the story that is filtered and disseminated by the
media.
In order to visualize a comparison, we analysed the terroristic
attacks in 2015 and compared them to their mediation through
the provider LexisNexis. The result is a graphical comparison for
each terroristic group throughout 2015, coloured according to the
ideological sources.

Are you sure you want to see this? Pt.1
This is the second phase of the synthesis course project. The
aim of this section was to understand and map a controversy
about the terrorist phenomenon.
To do this we got data from unstructured digital sources like
social networks, collaborative projects and websites.
The project is a website where every page is a question useful
to investigate the identified controversy: the visualization
(with its relative database) represent a possible answer.
In our case we decided to analyze people’s behavior about
searching for online terrorist contents. We started by the
google’s relative queries to understand what kind of contents
people were looking for, then we analyzed every video to
figure out how platforms shared this contents.
We made the same analysis with images in the web, and then
we investigated the online sentiment.
A strange behavior emerged from the research: people search
for violent contents but at the same time they react with anger
and fear. Every visualization increases the visibility of that
contents: web become a sort of cyclic terror machine.
The project was presented at the last Visualized conference
in Milan on 11 March 2017.

Google search + Raw Graphs
This step of the research focused on the individuation of a tematic-network inside the
controversy “Censorship and terrorism in
the U.S”. In particular we investigate Google
Search to understand if we could find out
which were the specific topics of the debate. The result was quite interesting, since we
discover that nowadays when we talk about
terrorism, we mainly refer to isis; and the
censorship is a topic covering mostly media
and national security fields. The squares in
the treemap show how much a couple of
word occurs in the text analyzed from the
Web and Isis is the biggest tile.
The visualization is created with Raw
Graphs.

Google Trends
Seealsology + Gephi
This step started with the intention to investigate the web-network
built around the controversy on information of terrorism and
censorship. We created different networks on Wikipedia trying to
understand in which thematic areas the controversy spread. The
final network was build around the page “Censorship in the U.S.”,
using Seealsology with distance 3.
Seealsology is a tool which allow to map all the linked see also-page
of a single wikipedia page.
We decided to use Wikipedia firstly to explore unknown
connections around and inside the controversy, but we found some
limits for what concerns our topic. In particular, Wikipedia doesn’t
create a tight connection between terrorism (as wikipedia page) on
one side, and censorship and media on the other; This is the reason
why we chose the page about censorship and focused just on a
branch inside of it, linked to terrorism.
The network-visualization is created with Gephi and it’s explorable
in the web thanks to javascript’s plugin sigma.js.

30

We firstly visualized the connections
between ‘ISIS’ and its related queries. We
wanted to show how the users’ attention
was focused on the contents published by
the terrorist group itself.
Intrigued by this clue we analyzed deeply
the Google Trend. We found out that line’s
peaks were linked to two types of ISIS’
events: terrorist attacks and executions
video publications. Since the people’s
attention was focused on uncensored
contents, we choose to limit the field of
analysis to the execution peaks. Moreover,
we analyzed the related queries for
each execution and we noticed again a
predominant occurrence of queries related
to the videos. These points were visually
identified thanks to the gathering of lines,
texts dimension and a color hint to highlight
‘isis’, ‘beheading’, ‘video’ as recurring
combination in the eight researches. Finally
this steps help us to choose the videos as
actors of the controversy and a connection
between Isis e Censorship.

31

Google images + downthemall
After the previous videos scraping we
noticed that the video-news is often spread
using a screenshot of the original video.
This visualization allows us to connect the
images to the integral videos. In this way
we observed which parts of the videos
were used as widespread images and we
organized them by Google rank. Each video
was converted into images using one frame
per second, so we could find the better
range of time to connect with the Google
images. Afterwards, all the videos were
compressed in a strip to provide an overview
about them and their duration.

Python (PRAW)
We download with PRAW (via Pyhton) all
the comments relative to the two kind of
video (censored and uncensored) to see how
people react from two differente discussions
on Reddit.
The colors are associated to different
emotions. We would like to show an
overview of the general amount of each
emotions, as the following chart briefly
explain, but also explain each precise
connection.

Google video + Raw Graphs
With this visualization we would like to investigate which where the
isis video spread online and which ones interested people the most.
The first element is represented by the color, indicating different
censorship levels, while the second one is shown by the lines sorted
by Google Ranking.
What we found interesting after the analysis was that often people
click more on uncensored videos that appear at the top of the
charts. Secondly, we can identify a precise association between
websites and typology of content published, to understand where
the different videos come from.

32

33

Visualized conference
Thanks to our professor Paolo Ciuccarelli, we got the possibility to
present this project at Visualized conference in Milan, on 11 march
2017. Giulia Zerbini, one of our team-mate, was the speaker at the
event.

34

The website

Are you sure you want to see this? Pt.2
The third phase of the project was focussed on the public
communication of the topic using the data collected in the
previous phase, creating an installation that allows the user to
physically “enter” in the dataset.
In addition to the installation, we had to program a website
useful to let people be in touch with our project.
The concept of our performance was centered on the
availability of terrorist online contents: which platforms
distribuited contents? What do people want to see? In
particular we focussed on the importance of the choices of
the single users, which are often unaware, that contribute to
increase visibility.
The installation has been exhibited from february 28th to
march 1st.

Experience
The experience can be divided in 2 different but relative moments.
One part is a single experience: the user accesses inside the black
box (a close black cube) and make a video experience, where he
gets informed about the murderer of the jordan pilot by Isis. After
the introduction, which is a short collage of video-news, we give
him the possibility to choice a content to complete the information.
Every content is a rectangle of a treemap, colored by type of
video (safe contents, video exerpt, violent contents). Rectangles’
dimensions get bigger when someone click on them, so the next
user will get a modified treemap link to the choices of previous
people. All this choices are registered in a personal database: the
results can be checked on the website.
The other part is a collective exploration of data found in the second
phase of the project: where video spread online, how platforms treat
these contents and what do people want to see.

The rush to stability
The rush to stability tells the story of politicians’
movements inside the chambers of deputies in Italy
during the current legislature.
The visualization show the parties considered as
centers of aggregation around which deputies
gravitate.
The story proceeds by month until today: deputies
who change party are distinguished by a color, from
yellow to red for every movement he/she makes.
Month by month, the visualization represent how
single parties’ balance change and how many
intrusives are there.

Obscura
Obscura is a personal project, born by the desire to
discover the essence of photography.
We created a darkroom to understand the storical
evolution of photography, revaluing techniques
which bring to the creation of a single image: it’s
like an exercise of the eye, understanding the
importance of a single shot and perceiving the
reality in a very careful way.

Studio osteopatico

Mo.Ma Studio Osteopatico
I realized this project for a brand new osteopathic clinic. the
osteopaths are young and energetic boys, they asked me for
an incisive communication that would evoke these values.
It has been thought for business card, brochure, t-shirt and
multimedial material for a social-media strategy.

Fondazione Arrigo e Pia Pini
Fondazione Arrigo e Pia Pini organizes events and projects to
support children with chronic disease or disability.
Thanks to Fondazione Pini, arts and design contribute
together for no-profit activities, whose revenues are intended
to organizations working to improve the conditions of these
children.
In 2017 the Foundation activate a plan of innovative projects
whose goal is to bring street art, in a partnership with the
local territory, to support non-profit organizations that work
with sick children.
My assignment was to create graphics artefacts for the
foundation: logotype, headed paper and business card. The
request was to think something that refers to the centuries-old
story of Fondazione Pini with an accurate look to the graphics
trends of the moment.
