The simmeriing hatred between Debbie

“This storylin

and one that I was very nervous about
taking on,” rev

plays Ross. “I know it’s a reality for some
people, so it’s important to get it right
and do the sto

and Ross was keen to offer his services

“Debbie has

and because R
Ross doesn’t have a family

INSIDE SCOOP
↘ FROM PREVIOUS PAGE

“Ironically, it’s the way Debbie speaks
to Ross that prompts his decision to
bow out of their arrangement,” explains
Michael. “She’s cold, and thinks he’s
taking baby steps rather than doing
what she wants against Joe. Ross is
trying to play a longer game, but Debbie
isn’t patient enough and she’s quite
snappy with him. Ross feels as if she’s
being ungrateful, so he wants out.”

NO ORDINARY JOE
Understandably, the Dingles don’t react
well when Ross announces that he no
longer wants any part of their plan. But
what he doesn’t realise is that Joe’s
henchman Graham has witnessed his
exchange with Cain – and it’s made him
suspicious about what Ross is up to.
“Cain and Ross have an argument,
and Ross walks off, leaving Cain fuming,”
Michael tells us. “I don’t think Cain is
too worried at this point, though, as it
doesn’t cross his mind that Ross could
team up with Joe against the Dingles.
“Surprisingly, Ross has enjoyed being
around Joe more than the Dingles,” adds
the actor. “Joe takes him to parties,
pays him handsomely and is also polite
to him. Ross realises he’d rather be on
Joe’s
Joe
s team – but just as he finds his

both Debbie and
Joe turn on him…”
With Ross out of
the picture, Debbie
begs Cain to take
over his duties, and urges him to plant
drugs up at the big house. Cain goes to
dodgy dealer Simon and asks him to do
the deed – but Debbie is stunned when
Simon later turns up at the garage
battered and bruised, and informs her
that their scheme was rumbled.

WRONG TIME AND PLACE
Meanwhile, Joe has figured out that
Ross has been working as a double
agent – and decides to confront him
about his duplicitous behaviour.
“Ross is gutted, as he was about to
stop playing games for the Dingles and
be loyal to Joe,” sighs Michael. “But
after Joe finds out and fires him on the
spot, Ross knows he’s messed things
up. He feels hard done by, so he takes
his revenge and steals Joe’s car.”

It’s a move that will cost Ross dearly,
though. While he’s nicking posh motors,
Debbie is instructing Simon to harm
Joe in exchange for a handsome cash
reward. Desperate Simon agrees to the
job – but there are tragic consequences
when he spots Ross getting out of Joe’s
car and mistakes him for his target!
What happens next will surely change
Ross’ life forever. But with acid attacks on
the rise in the UK, Michael has relished
the chance to work on something that’s
such a huge talking point right now.
“It’s a big subject, and that excites
me,” he admits. “It’s like being back at
drama school, where you would get a
play and then have to research all the
themes and topics. It’s great to have
something to sink my teeth into.”

CRACKING DOWN
It’s thought this is due to substances
such as household bleach being widely
available, while knives and guns are
more restricted. This has prompted the
proposal of laws prohibiting the sale of
corrosive substances to under-18s,

and imposing harsher
sentences on anyone caught
carrying acid as a weapon.

IN THE NEWS
A recent high-profile case involved
Arthur Collins (pictured), the former
boyfriend of TOWIE’s Ferne McCann.
He was sentenced to 25 years in prison after
throwing a corrosive liquid in a nightclub,
seriously injuring 14 people.
Model and acid-attack survivor Katie Piper
described her own ordeal as a life sentence,
after being left partially blind, with severe
scars on her upper body. She wants tougher
sanctions for those guilty of such crimes.

mmerdale is the first UK soap to
feature a story about an acid attack
– and it’s a hot topic in the news at
the moment. In London alone the number
of assaults involving a corrosive substance
has more than doubled since 2014, and
Britain now has one of the highest recorded
rates of acid attacks in the world.

Sins of

MEL IS REUNITED WITH HER
SON – UNTIL GHOSTS OF THE
PAST RETURN TO HAUNT HER…
EASTENDERS | BBC1 TUESDAY

T

he moment that Mel
has been praying
for finally arrives
this week, as she
enjoys an emotional reunion
with her son Hunter.
Mel is desperately relieved
to see her beloved boy again,
having been
forced to work
in cahoots with
gangster Ciara
in order to have
Hunter back by
her side. But
when his first
visit to Walford reveals tough
truths concerning his late
father Steve, Mel is left with
some explaining to do…
“Albert Square holds a lot
of memories for Mel – though

only a few of them are happy
ones!” our EastEnders sneak
reminds us. “Who knows if
she’d ever have returned were
it not for Ciara’s blackmail?
She had to save her child –
and now that she has, the last
thing she needs is to revisit
her chequered
past. But
Hunter has
questions
about the dad
he’s never met,
and he wants
answers!”
Mel fled Walford in 2002
after her husband Steve was
killed in a car explosion while
being chased by Phil Mitchell.
She was pregnant with Hunter

son have been living in Portugal
ever since. But this week, it
transpires that Mel may have
been a little economical with
the truth concerning Hunter’s
heritage, and she’s thrown as
her son discovers more about
the man Steve used to be.
“Mel knows better than
anyone just what a shady
character her dead husband
was,” insists our spy. “But
it appears she’s chosen to
keep Hunter in the dark about
Steve’s true nature. Now that

Mel and Hunter are on his old
stomping ground, though, will
Steve’s secrets be kept under
wraps? What do you think?”
Mel is horrified after she
realises Hunter has found out
everything that she’s kept
hidden from him all these
years – and the consequences
are painful, to say the least.
And when she finds Hunter at
the grave of his grandmother
– Steve’s mum, Barbara –
it’s clear that he won’t stop
asking until Mel tells all.

BAD
DAD!

Steve definitely didn’t
live a quiet life…

MURDER!

Steve arrived in 1998, after buying
the nightclub he relaunched as
E20. He bludgeoned his ex-lover
Saskia Duncan to death when she
tried to strangle him – and then
allowed his lackey Matthew Rose
to be sent down for the crime.

ADDICTION!

When Matthew’s conviction was
quashed in 2000, he terrified
Steve with a drastic revenge plot
– tying him up and threatening to
set him alight. The shock of this
attack sparked a drug addiction,
which Steve struggled to shake off.

KIDNAP!

Steve married Mel in 2001, the day
after discovering she’d slept with
Phil. As a result, he was the prime
suspect in the infamous ‘Who Shot
Phil?’ investigation. But when Phil
set up Dan Sullivan for the crime,
Dan kidnapped Mel in vengeance.

REVENGE!

Dan took the opportunity to
tell Mel a few home truths about
her husband. Horrified by the
revelation of Steve’s countless
criminal activities, Mel managed
to escape from Dan’s clutches
and proceeded to burn down E20.

ROBBERY!

Having messed up his insurance,
Steve was left brassic by the blaze
– so he organised a robbery to pay
for the club’s renovation, roping in
Billy to help. He reunited with Mel,
before setting his sights on rival Phil
– lying that he’d slept with Sharon.

Will Mel and Hunter discuss
secrets that were thought
to be long dead and buried?

“It seems there’s no getting
out of this – Mel is going to
have to put her boy in the
picture about his dad, warts
and all,” sighs our snitch. “He’s
always believed Steve to be a
good man, but Mel was just
trying to protect him. After all,
what’s the point in raking over

all the bad stuff when the
bloke is six feet under? Mel
reckoned fabricating this
perfect story was for the best.”
Whether Mel is ready for it
or not, will she be forced to
open up to Hunter about her
murky past with his father?
Allison Jones

DEATH!

Phil attacked Steve, who then slept
with Phil’s sister Sam – before
plotting to flee to the US with Mel,
Phil’s ex Lisa, and their daughter
Louise. A deadly car chase ensued,
with Phil grabbing Louise from
Steve’s car just before it exploded.

Rana outed

R

week, as betrayed
Zeedan reveals to
her family that she’s cheated

The horrified Habeebs can’t
believe it when they arrive at
the Nazir house to find teetotal
Zeedan handing out glasses
of whisky. They are confused
until Zeedan demands that
Rana tell them why he’s in this
state – and after she tearfully
admits to an affair, he reveals
that her lover was female…

“I don’t think Rana could
ever have been prepared for
how her family react, and how
disgusted they are with her for
being unfaithful,” says Bhavna
Limbachia, who plays the
conflicted woman. “Rana’s also
hurt because they expected
her to mess up – they are not
surprised and have always
thought her a disappointment.
Her marriage is the first time
her mum and dad had ever
seen her in a positive light.”
When Rana tries to explain
herself, it’s just as excruciating

as she’d anticipated. However,
there is part of her family’s
reaction she isn’t banking on,
as they make a shocking offer
to the young couple. But will
Rana take them up on it?
“It’s complex because there
is so much at stake for Rana,”
shares Bhavna. “She stands to
lose her family, her husband,

her husband’s family and
her friends. The fear of being
alone and being disowned by
the community is right at the
forefront of her mind.”

It’s not what you think…
Zeedan tries to hide Rana’s affair from his gran, but
of course Yasmeen finds out – and her response
is surprising. Having been the victim of a cheating
spouse herself, it would make sense for her to attack
Rana. Instead, Yasmeen shows her softer side…
“Leanne tells her what’s happened, and Rana
thinks she’s been fed to the lions – but Yasmeen is
quite reasonable and supportive,” reveals Bhavna.
“That completely throws Rana, though she finds
comfort in the reaction. Naturally, Yasmeen is
protective of Zeedan, but she tries to be fair and
understand both sides of the story.”
Will Yasmeen accept it if Zeedan’s marriage fails,
or will she disown her granddaughter-in-law?

his picture of David Platt out

with Street newcomer Josh
looks harmless enough – but it will
spark a horrifying turn of events.
It’s no secret that Coronation Street
bosses are lining up a harrowing rape
story for David, whose life will be turned
upside down after Josh reportedly
spikes his drink and assaults him.
“These snaps of actors Jack P
Shepherd [David] and Ryan Clayton
[Josh] filming in a bar on location
seem to suggest that is how the
plot might play out,” reckons our
Weatherfield snoop. “Just look at
David – he seems perfectly relaxed
as he downs a pint, unaware that
predator Josh is waiting to pounce.”
The story is already unfolding on
screen, as new Webster’s Autos
mechanic Josh ingratiates himself
with the locals by organising a charity
boxing match in murdered Luke
Britton’s honour. David is one of the
participants in the fight, and seeks
out Josh this week for extra tips on
his technique (see p30 for more).
It seems the pair are set to become

lurking behind that friendly facade?

But long-time Corrie viewers may remember that
Tracy underwent a kidney transplant back in 1995 after
taking an Ecstasy pill in a nightclub and collapsing. Her

died following a shocking racist attack, Tracy’s mum

be donated to save her troublesome daughter.
So, before we know it, Tracy could be handing out
words of wisdom to recovering Carla as the pair compare

“Looking back over the recent scenes with

right way, but it’s shown that he has a backbone.”
And Martin is certainly going to need that in the
coming weeks. Stacey is currently out in the cold,
while Martin is enjoying the support of his
family. However, let’s not forget that
Stacey has reinforcements on
the way, with the forthcoming
arrival of mum Jean and
her protective relative Kat!
But James thinks Martin

With everything that’s going on

As Martin begins to consider

GOLDEN GRAHAM
My favourite new character in
Emmerdale is Joe Tate’s driver

It’s weird talking about Billy like

It’s great because I’m picking

As Billy is also forced to confess that
he has lost his job, his world comes
crashing down around him. The future
isn’t looking good as Honey processes
his betrayal – but for Perry, it’s the
opportunity to mark his incredible
milestone with one hell of a story.

Have you made any plans to
celebrate your 20 years?
I should – it’s two decades! There are
some young actors joining EastEnders who
have never seen the show without me in
it, so I sometimes give myself a pat on the
back. I only signed to do three episodes!

Do you have any souvenirs
from those early days?

Funnily enough, I moved house a few
years ago and found an old diary of
mine from 1998. I was unemployed at
the time, so there was a page where the
morning said: ‘11.30am – sign on at
Stratford’. Then for the afternoon it read:
‘2.30pm – audition BBC EastEnders’. That
was the day that changed everything.

What has kept you with the show?
Well, people forget that I’ve been acting
since I was a kid. That was another
anniversary I hit recently – it was 40
years ago at Christmas that I was in
Oliver! in the West End as a member
of Fagin’s gang. Other actors will say
to me, “Do you not fancy anything
different?”, but I’ve been lucky enough
to do the National Theatre and the

the role of Billy down when they
offered it to me! I found out it was only

this will probably shoot me in the
foot if the opportunity for a longer job
comes along. But Julia Crampsie – who
is the casting director here – basically
said to my agent, “Look he’s

I had a lot of mates that were in this

me to suss things out, but
it’s a proper system now. You

and six weeks later you can’t

being recognised.

How do you cope with
the attention the show receives?
Sometimes if you’re just going out for a

planning on having my picture taken!’.
But the lovely thing is that people seem
to genuinely like Billy, so I don’t get
anything negative. People feel that they

When we get a new boss I just lie low in
the hope that they won’t go, “Hang on

for granted. Even if I have one line in a
scene, I want that line to be brilliant.

What would be your dream
storyline for Billy?
I reckon it’s time Billy and Honey got
married again. It’s wobbly right now,
but that would be nice as, if we did,
I think we’d be the only couple in soap
history to have had four weddings. Four
weddings and hopefully not a funeral!

this week, as she’s told that
her sister and father were
killed in the car crash that
very nearly led to her own demise.
While the news of her loss sinks in,
Rebecca’s guilty nephew Lachlan lurks,
unsure if she’ll remember that he was to
blame for his family careering into the path
of a lorry. But when Rebecca insists he will
pay for what he’s done, it appears his fears
have been borne out. And as Emily Head –
who plays Rebecca – joins us for a chat, she
tells us that ‘Lucky’ had better beware…
“For Rebecca, the idea of living without
her dad and her sister is the worst thing
that she can possibly imagine,” admits
the 29-year-old actress. “When she first
comes out of her coma, she’s totally
disorientated. And then the news about
her family is broken to her, and her
world just falls away. She struggles to
understand it all – it’s the most terrible
thing that has ever happened to her.”
Meanwhile, Robert is delighted that
his son Seb isn’t about to lose his mum
– not least because it was he and Seb
the Whites were chasing down when
the crash occurred. However, as Rebecca

memory begins to return.
“She’s trying hard to remember
everything,” explains Emily. “They
say that in periods of great trauma
you can recall before and after it, but
not the event itself – so at first it’s
just the lead-up she remembers. But
her brain is working overtime trying
to piece everything together.
“Then Rebecca wakes up feeling
really frightened, and she hears
Lachlan’s voice,” adds the actress.
“She turns to him and says, ‘I know
what you did – everyone will find
out and you won’t
get away with it!’”
Soon after, desperate
to try to make some
sense of everything,
Rebecca disappears
from hospital and
ends up back at Home

Joe Tate has bought
her former family seat. Hot on her
heels are Robert and Lachlan – yet as
they try to reassure her, is Rebecca set
to reveal Lachlan’s terrible secret?
“Lachlan is terrified of Rebecca
at this point,” sighs Emily. “Back
at the hospital he tries to convince
her she’s just had a dream, but she
screams at him to get out. He had
this relief when Rebecca said she
didn’t remember the crash – though
that has now definitely gone…”

CORONATION STREET | ITV MONDAY

“For someone so
sharp, Daniel can be

HE’S WEATHERFIELD’S UNLIKELY ROMEO,
BUT ROB MALLARD RECKONS DANIEL STILL

W

hen we first met
Ken’s bookish son
Daniel Osbourne,
we knew he was a
chip off the old block
intelligence-wise – but little did we
realise that he would give his Lothario
old man a run for his money with the
ladies too. With spoken-for Sinead,
Gazette editor Cindy and now cougar
Carla all falling for his charms, Daniel
is certainly, erm, keeping up the family
tradition. But even with that decent
track record, can Daniel really handle
a romance with Ms Connor?
“Oh, Carla is the cat with a mouse,
and from her perspective, Daniel is her
plaything!” laughs Rob Mallard, who
plays the smitten fella. “Daniel isn’t
aware of that at first, so when Peter
points out that Carla is using him, he
doesn’t want him to be right. But then
Carla and Daniel have this chat which is
almost ‘in for a penny, in for a pound’ –
and he figures that as long as he knows
that she’s using him, then she’s not!”
Given his enduring
devotion to young
Sinead, it’s interesting
that Daniel keeps having
flings with women who
are so much older than
him. But Rob insists it
comes as no surprise to
him, as it’s all down to
absent mother Denise.
“Daniel is Oedipus [the mythical
Greek king who killed his father and
married his mother], and has a whole
thing going on with women of a certain
age,” shares the actor. “In this latest
situation, obviously she’s Carla Connor
and has a certain magnetism. But

He might be after older women, but
Daniel doesn’t want the attention of the
gossips. When news breaks about him
and Carla, it’s not just the ire of her ex
– and his half-brother –
Peter that Daniel has to
contend with, but also
the fact that Sinead is
now in the know too.
“He’s gutted as he’s
pined for her for over a
year and lied about his
feelings for the good
of everyone else, and then when her
wedding to Chesney fell apart she still
didn’t come to him,” Rob tells us. “After
feeling spurned by Sinead, Daniel went
elsewhere, but when it goes public, he
panics. Bagging Carla gives him street
cred – but for her, it’s embarrassing, so
he never expected it to end up getting
around and for Sinead to find out.”

Carla the cougar:
Ms Connor is very keen
on a fling with Daniel

Daniel doesn’t have long to enjoy being
on Carla’s arm, though, after her collapse
from kidney failure (see p18). It’s a big
shock as Daniel had no idea Carla was
ill, and he’s shaken by the revelation.
“Daniel is sideswiped,” shares Rob.
“It’s another woman who has pulled
the wool over his eyes and hidden
something from him that he’s been
completely unaware of. For someone
who is so sharp in so many ways,
Daniel can be amazingly dense.”

Oedipus complex: Rob believes
Daniel’s love life is affected by the
relationship he had with his mum

The Carla issue brings Daniel into
conflict with Peter, who can’t believe
what’s been going on. The two men will
clash repeatedly as they butt heads over
hospitalised Carla, and Rob is excited
to find out more about this incredibly
dysfunctional sibling relationship.
“Peter is everything that Daniel
isn’t,” muses Rob. “Peter’s capable of
aggression, but also being merciful.
He’s lived a rough-and-tumble life
and can be fierce, yet has a
gentle side to him. Daniel sees
himself as more highbrow,
but he’s jealous of Peter.”
Their sibling rivalry will
continue as Carla’s health woes
bring them into the same orbit –
and it’s not going to be easy…
“There’s a brother code that says
‘You don’t try to kill our father’ and
‘You don’t sleep with my ex-wife’ – and
Daniel’s broken both of them!” laughs
Rob. “I can’t wait to look more closely
at Daniel and Peter, and his relationship
with his dad Ken too. There have been
a lot of absent males in his life.”

Cantruelovewin?

The big question viewers want
answered is whether star-crossed

get their romance back on track. So
does Rob reckon that there’s still

“Is Sinead the love of Daniel’s life?
I would like to say yes as everyone
is rooting for them,” admits the
actor. “But I think Ken’s prophecy is
right and time will end up showing
the differences between them –

HOLLYOAKS | Channel 4 WEDNESDAY

I

f you rekindled an old flame 30
years later, you’d expect things
to be a little different. But for
Hollyoaks’ Myra McQueen, things
have changed more than most.
Her former love Iain, who fathered her
son John Paul, has transitioned and is
now named Sally – but recent months
have proved the love between them is
still very much there. So, this week she
decides to finally take a chance on this
new relationship with her best mate.
It’s been a rocky road to romance
for the pair, and as we join stars Nicole
Barber-Lane and Annie Wallace – who
play Myra and Sally – for a chat about
their characters’ fledgling relationship,
they reckon that these two may just
have what it takes to go the distance…

We’re so happy to hear Myra and
Sally are finally getting together! What
do you think of them as a couple?
Nicole I think they’re great together!
Myra has loved Sally from a long time
ago – back when she was Iain – so they’ve
got that history. It was always the plan
to get them back together.
Annie They complement each other
very well. They both have the same
sense of humour, and I think it’s very
much the root of their bond. Myra is
quite casual in nature, whereas Sally’s
more conservative – but they’re similar
people underneath all of that.

Nicole, why do you think it’s taken
Myra so long to admit she loves Sally?
Nicole It’s been very difficult for Myra to
accept that Sally is now a woman. That’s a
massive thing for anyone to get their head

Long haul Sally:

around – all along we’ve been aware that
there are people watching who’ve been
through this themselves, and it’s difficult
for all parties involved. It’s about loving
somebody, but not necessarily loving their
physical being as it is now. There are a
lot of questions running through Myra’s
head, but the one thing she does know
is that she loves Sally.

And Annie, how hard has it
been for Sally to have Myra
keep rejecting her?
Annie I would imagine it’s been
quite hurtful for her. But Sally’s
smart, and she gets that this is
not going to be easy. For Sally
this is really straightforward –
she’s in love with Myra and she
wants to be with her. Myra’s not
gay, but she loves Sally, and it’s

more than just a sisterly love. So Sally
sees that this is very confusing for Myra
– and it’s not an unusual situation where
someone who’s trans is involved.

So what prompts Myra to finally
commit to Sally this week?
Nicole She’s frightened of losing her.
It always gets to a point where you can
tell that somebody’s had enough, and the
thought of Sally not being in Myra’s life is
too painful. She lost her once before – at
the time she didn’t understand why, but
now she does. She realises if she doesn’t
step up and say, “Yes, we’re together”,
then she may lose Sally for good.
Annie There’s a moment where Myra
has a bit of an epiphany about what she
wants from life. I think it’s going to be a
bumpy ride for the two of them, so it will
be interesting to see how it works out.

We’d love to see Myra
and Sally get hitched…

How do Sally and Myra’s loved

that they’re together now?
Nicole They’re not bothered – they
really aren’t! This is Hollyoaks, so everyone
has their own dramas going on. They
do have a son together, so
I think this is something
everyone saw coming,
and it’s not a big deal.
Annie What’s going to be
intriguing, though, is how
Mercedes reacts to it when
she gets back – because if
you remember, she had
misgivings about the relationship from
the start. So when she returns later this
year, there could be some disapproval.

Annie Oh yes, Nicole is great to work

what’s been great is that she’ss really gone
