EASTENDERS | BBC1 MONDAY

TRAGEDY STRIKES THE
KAZEMI CLAN, AS
CARMEL’S YOUNGEST
SON SHAKIL IS
ATTACKED AND
FATALLY STABBED…

THIS
WEEK!

P

repare for shocking scenes
in Albert Square this week,
as EastEnders tackles the
issue of knife crime – with
devastating consequences.
When teenage pals Keegan and Shakil
cross a violent gang, the situation
spirals rapidly out of control – leaving
both boys in mortal danger after the
pair of them are brutally stabbed.
While Keegan is found just in time
to be saved from his life-threatening
injuries, it’s a different story for poor
Shakil – who passes away soon after
he’s rushed to hospital. And as Carmel
and her eldest boy Kush collapse in
grief for the loss of their beloved Shaki,
the entire Walford community is
shocked to the core…

son’s death

“Every friend and neighbour feels
Kush and Carmel’s pain,” sighs our
Albert Square spy. “They can’t believe
this has happened on their doorstep.
For a parent to lose a child – particularly
one so young – is an agony few can
bear to imagine. Their hearts go out
to the Kazemis, and everyone stands
united in the face of this terrible tragedy.”
It’s after Keegan steals an unattended
bike belonging to a local gang member
that disaster strikes. Shakil urges his
mate to return it, but Keegan refuses
– and when Shakil takes the bike’s
padlock keys, intending to do the right
thing, both lads become a target.
Although landlord Mick turfs the thugs
out of the Vic, violence erupts outside…

What’s it been like,
playing out such a
dramatic storyline?
It’s like nothing I’ve ever
experienced in my life.
It’s a privilege to be
part of a story raising
awareness about knife
crime – it’s such an
important issue to tackle
ckle.
We’ve been working really

her brother was fatallly

Is there anything yo

Just the scale of the
problem. I’ve been
keeping an eye on thee
reality of knife crime –

an issue it is is shocking.

Walford residents help police

tragic outcome, though, as the
Kazemis eventually learn that
Shakil has passed away…
“Doctors do all they can, but
it’s too late for Shakil,” says
our sneak. “His injuries are too
severe, and Carmel and Kush
are told he hasn’t made it. It’s
a cruel and bitter blow, and the
idea they’ve lost Shaki forever
is too terrible to bear.”

Would you have

Sadly, a lot of stabbing

are fatal. Then there’ss a
family and a world off
people left to deal with
the consequences. That’s
the part of the story
which is crucial to telll,

as it’s the part most of us
don’t ever see. If neither
Shakil nor Keegan died,
we wouldn’t be showing
the true consequences
of knife crime.
Is there anything
you want the story
to achieve?
Number one for me is
raising awareness. It’s
scary how many young
people carry a knife, so
I want them all to watch
this – it needs to change.
If even one person stops
carrying a knife, we’ve
made a difference.
What did you make of

raped Bethany when she was being

“Part of Neil’s defence at his trial was
that he had children of his own, and a
daughter close to Bethany’s age,” our
cobbles source reminds us. “If Kayla
really is the girl in question, she’ll know
that her father was sent to prison for
what he did to Bethany. But why is she
keeping her true identity a secret?”
The smart money is on Kayla wanting
revenge on Bethany, who she surely
blames for her father being sent to jail.
Neil is an expert liar, so we wouldn’t put
it past him to have duped his family
into believing he’s innocent. On the
other hand, perhaps Kayla is horrified

his victim her support? Either way,
Bethany’s demons are set to resurface.

EastEnders viewers were devastated

“Barbara contacted the

Scott. “So, without giving him the full

she doesn’t receive a warm

our Albert Square insider. “So

Feeling downtrodden and

the Night Tube, and takes the
opportunity to con a passer-by
out of some cash. However,
as she is resigned to sleeping
rough on the streets, she soon
meets another homeless girl,
named Brianna, with whom

she decides to share some

“Hayley might act all tough,

Will she soon be reunited with

We still don’t know what exactly has happened
between Kat and Alfie, but over the past few
weeks it’s become increasingly clear just how
much Kat is missing her three kids – seven-yearold Tommy, and twins Bert and Ernie, aged three.
Although she’s been keeping up the pretence
that she’s in regular contact with them, we’ve seen
Kat refusing to answer calls and texts from Alfie.
We’ve also witnessed her pretending she’s been
at the cinema with the children, when in reality
she was alone. Surely it won’t be long
until Stacey and the rest of the Slaters
realise there’s a major problem?
This week, we see Kat pining
after her kids once more, and
she wonders if it’s finally time to
send a message to her estranged
husband. Will she give in to
temptation and call Alfie – and
if so, can we expect him back in
Albert Square any time soon?

after the troubled lass has
retired to bed and her mobile
phone rings, Kat sneakily tries
to answer it – on the off-chance
she’ll be able to discover
something that she can use
to her advantage. However,
Hayley is still awake and
manages to catch Kat in the
act! This is surely only going
to make the warring pair even
more cautious of each other.”
Later, Hayley lets slip that
she’s going out to meet a new
man, and decides to ‘borrow’
some of Stacey’s clothes. On
hearing this, Kat changes

in Erinsborough
this week, as
wicked teacher Finn Kelly
arrives back in town!
The last time we saw the
villain, he was being carted

to tampering with Susan’s

manipulation had turned
everyone on Ramsay Street
against him, which begs
the question – why exactly
would he want to return?

“Finn is back to settle some

Erinsborough. I think that

But it’s turned into a full-on

As the week kicks off, Elly is

Ramsay Street to fix their

have been estranged for years,
and Elly is keen to make up
for lost time – however, Bea

The plot thickens when
Bea returns to her hotel room

Rob. “Elly and Bea have never

Fans will have to tune in to
find out what dastardly Finn is
up to – though whatever it is, it’s
bound to spell bad news for
the locals! And Rob hints that
his alter ego is set to be even

HOT ROD’S A HERO
This may be an odd thing to say, but Emmerdale’s
Rodney is my hero! I really admire his lust for
life – as a man of a certain age myself, I wish
I had half his energy. Maybe I should book
a ticket to Ibiza, and see if my waistcoat and
cravat have the same efect on the ladies!

BYE-BYE, RY RY
I’m so glad that Ryan’s killing
spree has finally come to an end
in Hollyoaks. And thank goodness
they actually found his body –
I thought it would be like Corrie’s
Phelan and he would still be out
there somewhere. There have been
way too many serial killers in that
village over the past few years –
they need to give it a rest now.
| Judith
I’m just gutted that Rick Astley

The

BIG
DEBATE!
AIDAN’S HIDDEN PAIN
It was a brave move for Corrie to tackle
male suicide – but judging from the
reaction to Aidan’s death, the soap has
sparked a conversation over something
that really needs to be talked about…
Shayne Ward’s portrayal of
suicidal Aidan was powerful,
compelling and utterly
heartbreaking. So many of
Aidan’s family and friends are
asking why they didn’t see
the signs, but I know from
personal experience that
people hide their true feelings
so well and, in many cases,
nothing anyone can say or
do will change the outcome.
I really hope this story will
encourage more men and

their families to discuss male
suicide, and save some lives.
| Ann, Runcorn
When a person commits
suicide, they don’t just decide
randomly that they’ll end
their own life. Sometimes
for the person suffering in
silence, unfortunately suicide
is the only one way out – and
they may not want their
family to read the signs.
| Mitchell, Abingdon

ILLUSTRATION: ROB DAVIS

I love the
Astoni
family
in Home
and Away,
so their
reaction
to Maggie’s cancer has been utterly
heartbreaking to watch. But what
I admire most about them is the
way they pull together in a crisis
– the actors who play them have a
great rapport on screen, and really
do seem like a convincing family.
| Emilie
Something tells me there are
tough times ahead for your
favourite Bay clan, Emilie.

Eva was so convincingly
grief-stricken at the news
of Aidan’s death that I cried
with her! Also, Johnny’s
devastation at the loss of his
son was truly moving, and
left a lump in my throat.
| Linda, Sheffield
But some of you wish the
story hadn’t ended Aidan’s
time in Weatherield…
Although I applaud this
storyline for highlighting
the problem of male suicide,
I must admit that I wish the
Coronation Street writers hadn’t
chosen Aidan as the character
to do it. I thought that he
could have grown into a
Mike Baldwin-type character,
and had a lot of potential as
part of the Connor family.

PAUL’S PAL
In Neighbours, Paul said
that the lady who ran the

Lassiters before. Is she a
proper past character?
| Joy, Chester
She is indeed! Caroline
Perkins worked as a
receptionist in 2012 –
and indulged in some
very shady antics with
Paul! She later tried to
sue him for harassment.

“In Neighbours – when Henry Ramsay found a gun buried
in Mrs Mangel’s back garden, and we all wondered if
she’d bumped off her little-seen husband, Len! (Okay,
that’s not really a shoot-out, but it involves a gun)”

RAINIE’S MEN
In EastEnders when Max

more rounded now than he once was,”
shares Mikey. “The good thing for me
as an actor is that it gives me so much
scope. Gary can be a hard man – he can
even be a criminal in some ways – but
everything he does is always done with
his heart in the right place!”

Can Gary and David call a truce?
When Gary first arrived in
Weatherfield, he and next-door
neighbour David were arch-rivals.
Fast forward a decade, and
Gary identifies his former foe
as a man in need of a friend…
“Gary can recognise himself
in David,” reveals Mikey. “When
I first started at Corrie, David and
Gary were billed as the new Mike
Baldwin and Ken Barlow in the
feuding stakes. It hasn’t helped that
Gary’s going out with David’s sister
and got someone else pregnant –
but Gary can see David is suffering.

“He thinks David is going through
PTSD, which Gary’s been through
too. Gary feels guilty, and wants to
redeem himself to the Platts. But the
main thing is he feels for David’s kids.
That’s why he wants to help him.”

ary is the one
person who has
never had the
wool pulled over his eyes
about Phelan,” Mikey
North reminds us, as his determined
alter ego finally tracks down his
nemesis in Wales this week (see p8).
“Phelan has fooled a lot of people, so
it’s great that Gary and the Windasses
are set to be a part of his finale – it’s
like the story is coming full circle.”
The Gary who bravely risks life and
limb in a determined bid to save his
nearest and dearest from the scourge of
Phelan’s evil deeds, is a changed man
from the mixed-up ex-soldier who
arrived on the Street back in 2008. But
as Mikey settles down with us to chat
about Gary’s current crusade, he believes
his character is still living and learning…
“Gary’s a good guy – and that’s
what’s changed about him over the
years,” insists the 31-year-old. “Back at
the start he was that brash, hard man
who just wanted to fight everyone – but
he’s grown up. I do think he’s a good
man now, but there are still those traits
that we saw when he first arrived.
“Gary makes the wrong decisions,
but with the right intent,” adds the
actor. “He just doesn’t see what’s
going to unravel afterwards.
However, this time, everything he’s
doing is for his mum, Anna.”
Since Anna is behind bars,
serving a five-year sentence after
Phelan framed her for pushing
Seb off a ladder, Gary is
understandably hell-bent on
bringing his family’s nemesis
to justice – whatever the cost!
“When Gary gets the tip-off
about Phelan’s whereabouts, he
knows he can’t stop himself from
going after him,” admits Mikey.
“He didn’t really think that Phelan
was still alive, but in some ways
he feels that everything that’s
happened with Phelan is because
of him. And once the thought is in
Gary’s head, he doesn’t let it go.

Jan’s

WORLD!
Di Botcher reveals all about the newcomer…

T

here’s a new boss in
charge of Holby City
ED’s paramedics this
week – and she’s not someone
Sam or Iain want to mess with!
We catch up with Casualty’s Di
Botcher to find out more about
her fearsome alter ego Jan…

What can you tell us about Jan?
The first words that come to
mind are human bulldog! She’s
determined, tenacious and singleminded – but she’s loyal as well.
She doesn’t suffer fools gladly.
She’s not sentimental, she’s too
practical for that, but she’s got
a big heart. I like her very much.

What is she like as a boss?
She’s there to come down hard
on her team, but it’s like a family.
You can criticise your own family,
but if anybody else does, you’ll
fight to the death for them. She
quickly realises that Sam and
Iain are good people – as long
as they remember that there’s a
pecking order and she’s top dog!

And she already knows
Charlie and Dufy…
Jan’s been around the block a
few times, so she knows them
from the past. She has a love-

hate relationship with Charlie,
but Duffy just laughs at her – she
thinks Jan is outrageous! My first
scene was with Cathy [Shipton,
aka Duffy] and she was gorgeous.

Are you settling in at Casualty?
There are wonderful people here.
I didn’t really know what I was going
into, but I was bowled over by how
friendly everyone is. I’ve had people
knocking on my dressing room
door who I’ve not even filmed
scenes with, introducing themselves
and giving me a hug. It’s lovely.

How is it playing a paramedic?
I love it! We have the best of both
worlds because we’re often in the
hospital, but we also get to go out
and about to different places, which
keeps the job fresh. It’s made me
want to do a first aid course – just
think how many lives could be
saved if we all knew what to do.

What else is coming up for Jan?
There will be more focus on the
paramedics, and what it’s like to
be the first responder on the scene.
Playing a paramedic is not something
I would have ever thought of
for myself, so I’m thrilled that
someone else thought of it for me!

Mother’s
RUINED?
AS DEE DEE’S CONDITION WORSENS,
ALEX FLETCHER WONDERS
IF DIANE CAN COPE – AND
REVEALS HER REAL-LIFE TEARS…

D

iane Hutchinson is living
through every parent’s worst
nightmare at the moment,
as she deals with a seriously
ill child. And when Inside Soap settles
down for a chat with our old pal Alex
Fletcher, it’s clear that despite Diane’s
heartache, the actress is enjoying her
alter ego’s dramas…
“Diane doesn’t hold back how she
feels, does she?” chuckles the star.
“I kind of think, ‘Oh, Diane, just wind
your neck in sometimes!’ Even I get
the scripts and wonder how I’m going
to make it work! It’s actually not that
depressing when we’re shooting,
because we have light moments within
it. It’s hard work, but it’s good.”
While Diane’s daughter Dee Dee
is undergoing treatment for her
autoimmune encephalitis, the pressure
is mounting for her and Tony. Husband
and wife are constantly arguing, even to
the point that their poorly daughter has
to tell her mum and dad off! And Alex
is full of praise for her little co-star…
“Young Lacey Findlow, who plays Dee
Dee, is such a fantastic little actress that

me and Nick [Pickard, who
plays Tony], are just reacting
off the back of what she’s
doing,” laughs the star, who
began acting in her teens in
Brookside. “She’s giving us
tips, actually. The other week,
we stalled in the middle of
a scene, and I said to her,
‘Lacey, you forgot to say your
Mother care:
Diane looks after
line’, and she
little Dee Dee
said, ‘No, Alex,
you forgot to
say yours!’ – and she was
right! Seven years of age!”
Part of the pressure on
the Hutchinson family
comes from the fact that
Dee Dee isn’t the pair’s
biological daughter, and
while Tony thinks birth-mum Tegan
should be told how serious things
are, Diane is digging her heels in.
“I think, because Tegan’s been in
that coma, Diane doesn’t want to
put her in the position where she’s
making any decisions,” sighs Alex.
“The girl hasn’t been well enough,
first and foremost!”

Will the accidental baby swap of
Dee Dee with Tegan’s daughter, Rose,
come back to haunt everyone though?
“Well, not at the minute,” teases
Alex, smiling. “I can say I’ve filmed
some really lovely scenes with Jess [Ellis,
who plays Tegan], where we’re trying to
do the right thing by Dee Dee, putting
all our feelings to one side.”
It’s clear that there’s still a few more
twists and turns to come in this story,
and Alex is full of praise for the scripts
that she’s working on.
“I was reading scripts in bed,” she
tells us. “I was a week ahead of myself.
With the really heavy stuff coming up,
I like to be prepared. With one scene,
I sat and cried in my bed! I then tweeted
the writer, ‘Cheers for this – I’m
actually sitting at home, sobbing!’”
Since Alex has two kids of her own –
13-year-old Yasmin and Hanson, who’s
nearly two – we wondered if it’s difficult
to leave the drama of such an emotional
storyline at work.
“Yes! It is! Loads of
people are really good
at switching off, but I’m
not,” confesses the star.
“Also, as Lacey has to have
all the little tubes stuck to
her, and the intravenous
drip in her little hand,
part of my job, I think, is
to just make sure that she’s okay. Nick
and I are really conscious of that.
“When I get home, my eyes are puffy
from a long day, standing about, crying,”
adds Alex. “So now with the lighter
nights, I take the baby out in the pram,
just to wind down a little bit. Then I go
home – and collapse in a heap!”

in ITV’s police drama Scott

classic novel Jamaica Inn. But
in the end, he couldn’t resist
the lure of the Woolpack!

2

Danny and the Miller
clan – his parents, sister
Lucy and brother Paul –
appeared on All Star Family
Fortunes back in 2011, where
secrets from the actor’s past came to
light. When he was just five years old,
Danny played the part of an angel in his
school Nativity play – but his mother
revealed that “he was a little devil in the
classroom,” and that she and Danny’s
dad “w
were forever having to go and

Danny made his
Emmerdale debut in
2008, becoming the
second actor to portray
y
Aaron Livesy – taking
over the role from Danny Webb,,
who had previously played
the teenager. Aaron’s most
memorable storylines during
the past decade have seen
the lad come to terms with his
sexuality, help his lover Robert
cover up Katie Sugden’s death,
and be sent to jail for GBH.

Although his alter
ego got hitched (kind
of) to Robert Sugden
last year, Danny is
uncertain whether
he’d want to get married in
real life – because he reckons
it’s far too expensive! “I’d
need convincing, because
it’s become a thing now
where people spend £20,000,
£30,000 or even £40,000 on
their wedding,” bemoaned
the star, who dated Hollyoaks
actress Kirsty-Leigh Porter
(Leela) for several years until
2015. “I can think of so many
other things I’d spend that
money on than just one day.”
However, he did
realise he might be
making a mistake.
“I will get zero dates
now, as everyone
loves a wedding!”

7

Together with his
fellow actor best
friend Daniel
Jillings, Danny
co-founded
children’s bereavement
charity Once Upon A Smile
in 2011, in memory of former
Emmerdale producer Gavin
Blyth. The charity strives to
offer emotional and practical
support for bereaved families,
and was set up when the two
pals realised there was a lack
of support for families after

8

Although he claims
to be a hopeless
singer, Danny’s not
too bad at miming!
Along with many
of his Emmerdale chums,
he mimed along to Tony
Christie’s 1971 hit (Is
This The Way To) Amarillo?
for a special charity video.

9

Danny confesses that his one big phobia
is heights! In fact, he once had the option
to do a skydiving stunt for Emmerdale, but
turned down the chance – leaving Marc
Silcock, who played Aaron’s partner Jackson
Walsh, to undertake the challenge on his own! Danny has
since said he regretted his decision – so maybe it’s time
for Emmerdale bosses to give Aaron a literal cliffhanger?
