this week – but it’s looking
more ‘happy never after’ for
the bride and groom, thanks
to Phelan’s trail of terror.
The couple had planned
a low-key ceremony in the
Bistro following the upset of
Aidan’s recent passing – but
even before their unexpected
guest arrives waving a gun
around, Robert and Michelle’s
big day appears doomed…
“First Michelle learns that

he reckons Michelle deserves

Of course, Robert chooses

EMMERDALE | ITV TUESDAY

Charity is just a
teenager when she

T

he horror of Charity’s
younger years is
revealed this week –
as a series of dramatic
flashbacks to her teens show
the full extent of the abuse she
suffered at the
hands of vile DI
Mark Bails.
As Charity is
forced to finally
share with
Vanessa what
happened to her,
viewers will get to witness her
terrible ordeal in the special
scenes featuring a younger
version of the Dales favourite.
At the beginning of the week,
Vanessa learns about the baby

boy Charity had as a result of
the abuse she suffered – and
attempts to investigate further
with Harriet. So as Charity
reveals the whole story of what
happened to her, Vanessa is
even more
determined to

– and knows
the baby’s DNA
is the missing
piece of
evidence that
could help her partner launch
a criminal case against Bails.
“This is harrowing stuff, but
Charity has to finally open up
about what happened all those
years ago,” says our Dales

“I think
viewers will
be shocked!”
Talented newcomer Mica Proctor tells
us about being the younger version
of the troubled Ms Dingle…
How do you think the audience will react
to seeing Charity in her younger years?
I think they will be shocked, as I don’t think they
know the full extent of what Charity has endured.
You get the gist that she’s been through a lot, but
this is a real eye-opener, and it’s very tragic.

What has it been like to play a Dales icon?
Charity’s flashback
shines a light on her
harrowing past

It was a little bit nerve-racking. I felt like I needed
to do the character justice as she was only 14
when this terrible thing happened, but I also
needed to make sure I got the mannerisms right.
I watched Emma Atkins play Charity on screen,
and I looked at the way she held herself; how she
crossed her arms quite a lot; the way she walked.
I wanted to incorporate it in the younger Charity.

What make-up and costume process did you
have to go through to look like young Charity?
I didn’t have to do much, but I have blue eyes, so
I had to wear green contact lenses. My hair was
pretty similar, so we just curled it, and the clothes
were 90s-style – which was awesome.

Were you and Emma on set at the same time?

insider. “She’s grown so close
to Vanessa, and she trusts her
– though how will she feel about
her other half’s meddling?”
Charity has already revealed
that Bails kept her at a flat and
repeatedly raped her in her
youth. But he doesn’t know
she had his child, and the idea
of locating her late son’s grave
and exhuming his body to get
DNA to use in a trial against
the detective is too much for
Charity to bear – and Vanessa
is unable to change her mind.
“Charity is determined to let
the truth about her secret son
remain buried,” says our spy.
“She has spent years trying
to put this all behind her, but

Bails keeps popping up in her
life. Charity’s story shows why
she’s so scared of him and whatt
he could do next. Vanessa
and Harriet don’t realise the
damage they will do if they
don’t let this secret rest.”
Charity has spent her life on
the fringes of criminality, alwayss
chasing money and power –
and admitting the root of all
this dysfunction is going to
be tough. But now that she’s
in a relationship with a woman
who truly loves her, and is
blessed with three children
who need their mum, will
Charity find the strength to
stand up to Bails once more?
Kate White
e

Emma and I were on set the same time for a few
things. It was nice to work with her, and she’s such
a good actress. It was helpful to see her get into
character and into that mindset.
You don’t see that side when
you’re watching on TV – you
don’t see what they do to
get to that position.

“He’s been

But while Sami is a man on

Brave David
decides to
speak out!
HE OPENS UP TO GAIL – AND
REPORTS JOSH TO THE POLICE…

D

avid is at last ready
to face his demons
this week, as he
informs the police
that Josh raped him.
Having buried his inner
turmoil for weeks, David takes
the brave step after meeting
another of Josh’s victims –
and witnessing the emotions of
grief-stricken neighbour Johnny.
But is he strong enough to see
the traumatic task through,
and will it bring him the closure
he so desperately needs?
“David shouldn’t be scared
that he won’t be believed – this
is the point of the storyline,”
insists Jack P Shepherd, who
plays him. “He shouldn’t feel
embarrassed. He should talk
and not keep it all bottled up

inside him. David realises that
he can’t move on until he does
that. For Josh to get punished,
David has to talk to the police.”
As the week begins, David
is tracked down by Dec, an
old colleague of Josh’s who
Shona discovered was also
one of his victims. Dec insists
that he can’t bring himself to
go to the police about Josh,
and that he wants Shona to
stop bothering him. But shortly
afterwards, David finds himself
listening in as Johnny – who’s
mourning the loss of his boy
Aidan – confides in his friend
Peter, and what he hears
changes everything…
“Johnny says he wishes that
his son Aidan – who recently
took his own life – would have
talked to him about what was
going on in his head, which
hits home for David,” shares
Jack. “Even though David has
been extreme in his behaviour
at times, no one knew what
he was dealing with until he

Despite his arrest,
Josh continues to

– and her believing him made

F

at Home Farm, Cain

demanding answers about
what’s been going on.
“Cain is on the warpath after
he finds out what’s happened,”
reveals our Emmerdale insider.
“When he learns the full extent
of the sorry saga from Graham,
he’s sent into a blind panic…”
Graham manages to calm
Cain long enough to divulge
how Ross completely flipped
out, tied him up with duct tape
and threatened Joe with a gun
– playing a deadly game of

Russian roulette with a
single bullet that he had
loaded into the weapon.
Graham also explains how
Ross is now utterly convinced
that Joe is the guilty party who
instructed drug dealer Simon
to carry out the acid attack
that left Ross with permanent
scars on his face. Of course,
it was Cain’s daughter Debbie
who was responsible for
ordering the hit, and the real
intended target was ironically
Joe himself – a cover-up that
Cain is now complicit in.
“Cain is aghast to hear
how far events have now

escalated,” says our informant.
“And his anxiety turns to
pure horror when he discovers
that the skirmish with Ross
and his firearm has resulted in
someone actually being shot!
Everything has spiralled way
out of control – and Cain can’t
help but feel responsible for
kicking off the whole grim
chain of events. He’s sickened,
and realises that he has to

confront Ross before he
stoops to a new low. But how
much worse can things get?”
As Cain digests the details,
Graham and Joe are left
convinced that he’ll reprimand
Ross for what he did. Do they
want Cain to punish him? Or
would they rather this whole
situation was laid to rest?
“It depends on a lot of
factors,” teases our source.

talk things through. But what
does Cain have in mind? Is it
revenge, more lies – or will he
finally come clean with the
truth and reveal how Debbie
was the one who inadvertently
caused Ross’ injuries?
Tom Spilsbury

Cain must be haunted by his
actions every time he sees
Ross’ scars, which serve
as a constant reminder
of the role he played
in the attack. And Jeff
couldn’t agree more.
“Yeah, absolutely,”
sighs the star. “As much
as Cain is a tough guy,
he has got a heart! With the
whole situation surrounding
the acid attack on Ross,
Cain feels incredibly guilty.
“He was the one who
introduced Simon to Debbie
in the first place, and paid him
to plant drugs at Home Farm.
Now obviously, Debbie
didn’t order an acid attack
on Ross – but she did
go to Simon and ask
him to rough up Joe.
“So although Simon
is where the real
blame lies, Cain still
feels guilty,” adds
Jeff. “Without him
introducing Simon
to Debbie, there
would have been

BIG
DEBATE!

NICO BACK FROM THE DEAD!
My jaw almost hit the loor when Sienna’s
stalker in Hollyoaks turned out to be her
‘dead’ daughter Nico! And the shocks
just kept on coming as Nico stabbed
her mum and left her to die…
I guessed right from the
start that Sienna’s stalker
was going to be Nico! It’s
the golden rule of soap – if a
character’s body isn’t found,
then they’re probably not
dead. It was still a brilliant
twist to see Nico stood in
the middle of Sienna’s flat.
| Jilly, Macclesield
It would have been a much
better story if Sienna seeing
Nico had all been in her head.

What if she had just imagined
that she was being stalked all
along? Classic Sienna!
| Sean
How could Hollyoaks just
kill off Sienna like that? She’s
my favourite character, and
I cried my eyes out when
they said she was dead. Nico
stabbing her like that was
such a brutal way to go –
Sienna deserved better.
| Colin, London

ILLUSTRATION: ROB DAVIS

RING THE CHANGES

But some Hollyoaks fans
can’t be fooled that easily…
I do not think Sienna is dead.
I think Ben’s son – who is also
a copper – has her put into
witness protection, so Nico
will come out of hiding.
| Thomas
Sienna being dead doesn’t
make any sense. If she really
was gone for good, I don’t
think they would have teased
it with the flash-forward of
her funeral. Also what would
be the point of bringing back
Nico just to have those couple
of scenes with Sienna? I’d
stake my Soapbox winnings
on her still being alive!
| AJ, London
But did you guess that Nico
was hiding a baby bump
under that coat? Or that
Warren would turn up?

DEATH WATCH
Me and my husband got

| Paul
Yes – lots! Basically, the
rule is: try to live on
the old, odd-numbered
side of the street! If we
don’t include the Rovers,
only No 9 on the oddnumbered side (currently
home to Fiz) has seen a
murder – Lynn Johnson
was killed there by her

husband Roy back in
1975. No 5 (currently
Chesney’s house) was
the location of John
Stape’s murderous
attack on Charlotte
Hoyle, but she survived
to die in hospital. By
contrast, all three houses
on the ‘new’ evennumbered side have seen
juicy murders, including
Maxine Peacock at No 4
(now Sally’s house),
Des Barnes and Charlie
Stubbs at No 6 (the
Nazirs’) and Callum
Logan at No 8 (the
Platt house).

THE

BIG

interview

“This is the hardest
thing I’ve ever done
on Emmerdale!”
PHOTO: REX/SHUTTERSTOCK

As the Dales takes us back to Charit
nt,,
Emma Atkin
nss and co-star Michelle Hardwick
relect on tthis heartbreakingly dark story…

EMMERDALE | ITV TUESDAY
t turns out that there’s a
reason why Charity Dingle is
so damaged, destructive and
sometimes even diabolical –
and it’s a secret of her past
she thought she’d long since
locked away. Charity is a
person haunted by demons from her
days as a homeless young woman –
little more than a child – when she
was forced into prostitution.
This week, Emmerdale takes us on
a harrowing journey back to Charity’s
youth, as she finally opens up to
Vanessa and tells the story of what
happened all those years ago. Inside
Soap ventured on a trip to the Dales to
find out more from actress Emma Atkins,
who plays Charity, and her on-screen
lover Michelle Hardwick (Vanessa)…

Hi, Emma – did you know the
full extent of Charity’s tragic
backstory before now?
Emma I was just told that it could be
quite dark – but I knew that Charity
was an ex-prostitute, she was on the
streets for quite some time, she was
excommunicated from her family, and
she was in a desperate state. So I was
given little nuggets of information.
Only when DI Bails turned up in the

pulling a dramatic face and giving it
large, but you don’t. You listen and be
still, because it’s Charity we’re watching
and listening to. It’s been a joy seeing
Emma work – I’ve learned a lot from her.

Michelle, how did you feel about
Vanessa being the one to whom
Charity inally reveals what
happened to her in her youth?
Michelle Well, Vanessa’s the audience

How hard was it for you to get
into Charity’s mindset when you
ilmed these tough scenes, Emma?
Emma Just very challenging, and the

– that’s why she’s there. It would have
been easy for me to be in the scene

hardest thing I’ve ever done while I’ve
been on the show, but I’ve loved every
second of it. I know that sounds weird!

Teenage nightmare:
Young Charity is played
by star Mica Proctor

Michelle made it so easy as well. When
you are filming scenes like this, you
need to come back to the story and never
wander too far to any personal emotion.

There’s some brilliant use of 90s
music in the episode that helps to
ground you in the time that all of
this is taking place, isn’t there?
Michelle Yes, it’s so clever. There are
many little moments of transition you
may miss on the first watch, but will see
second time round – like when Charity
arrives at the hospital, and suddenly it’s
a maternity wing in the 90s.
Emma Everything was spot-on – the
set design, the music, everything. The
radio starts playing Adamski’s Killer as
Charity is driving to the hospital, and
that connects her to that time.

What was it like working with
Mica Proctor, who plays young
Charity in this episode?
Emma Mica was incredible – she’s
brilliant. She doesn’t have to speak,
her eyes say it all. We didn’t talk about
Charity together before filming, but
I was there when she did some of her
scenes, and I was blown away. Mica is
a gorgeous human, too – she came in
and was part of the team immediately.
I have her phone number, so I must
text her and say how brilliant she was.
Michelle Mica said she’d watched clips
of Emma and was trying to mimic her
mannerisms. She’d really done her
homework, and she was fantastic.

Do you think that Emmerdale
pushes the boundaries with some
of the stuff it shows at 7pm –
particularly in this episode?
Emma It’s so well-filmed and wellwritten that I think we’ve got away
with it. There’s only so much we can
show. There are bits when you say, “Oh
my goodness, is that going to go out?”,
but we have people working hard to
make sure it’s okay for the time slot.
Michelle There are occasions when you
know where it’s going, but you don’t
see it – like with Lachlan holding a rock
over Gerry in an episode recently. The
moment when young Charity gets hit
is powerful stuff, and obviously with a
story like this, it’s going to be hard.

How did you shake off all this
darkness after ilming, Emma?
Emma My house is very hectic with my
little boy Albert and my dog, so when

so funny, lovely and caring. We have
chats where he goes, “Good day at work,
Mummy?”, “Yeah, I’ve been crying all

have to find a new job!”. We were in

the newsagent, and he saw a picture of

EASTENDERS | BBC1 TUESDAY

I

t seems that hardly a day goes
by without a news report about
yet another young person who’s
been stabbed on the streets of
London – and with EastEnders
being set in the heart of the capital,
it was about time the soap tackled
this worrying trend. Viewers were
distraught when Keegan and Shakil
were violently knifed by a gang last
week, with tragic Shakil succumbing
to his injuries. But as we settle in for a
chat with star Bonnie Langford (Carmel)
about her character’s crippling grief,
she tells us how she was honoured to be
involved in such an important plot…
“I think it’s incredibly brave and
important that EastEnders has taken on
this story, and that they’ve treated it
with such sensitivity and commitment,”
she explains. “As an actor I felt a huge
sense of responsibility. I feel that it is so
much more than just telling a story –
it’s about sharing the very private and
personal world of trauma and grief, and
the effects that a violent act can cause.”
The raw pain that Carmel feels over
losing her beloved boy is clear to see
this week. Her eldest son Kush is trying
to be her rock in the days following
Shaki’s death, and her other son Darius
flies in from Dubai with his dad Umar
to support Carmel in her darkest hour.
But even the love of her family can do
little to ease Carmel’s suffering.
“Carmel is not coping well at all,”
sighs Bonnie. “She starts off in denial,
completely refusing to accept that this
has happened. She then goes through
an absolute roller coaster of emotions,
to the point where Kush is very worried
about her – and quite rightly so. When
it does finally dawn on her what’s
happened, she is very, very angry, and
completely lost. Shaki was her baby,
and she feels this huge guilt because she
was away at the time of the crime.”
However, it’s not just guilt that
Carmel feels. She’s also furious that
someone could have inflicted this

terrible fate on her beloved boy. So will
she be looking for someone to blame?
“Carmel wants to blame everybody,”
confirms Bonnie. “She feels that these
young people don’t seem to understand
the consequences of acting out of anger,
status, pride or greed. She thinks they
have no respect for their own lives
or anyone else’s. Carmel just can’t
understand any of it, and she doesn’t
know what to do. She is determined to
do something to try to make up for it
– to try to change it – but of course the
one thing she will never do is change
the outcome for herself.”
Watching Carmel’s world fall apart
is bound to be harrowing for EastEnders
fans. But Bonnie tells us how important
it is to show the lasting impact that
knife crime has on the victim
ms’ families.
“When the immediate afteermath
has passed, for others the wo
orld carries
on as normal – but for Carmel and her
family, life has changed forever,” she
says. “There is an emptiness, a void that
will never be filled again. Those are
oors – that
the times – behind closed do
we rarely see, unless it happeens to us.
Ultimately when the frenzy is
i over,

the tragic lad, and she

a tough adjustment.

the actress. “Out of all of

Girl
POWER!
NEIGHBOURS’ JODI ANASTA TELLS
US THAT IT’S TIME FOR THE LADIES
OF ERINSBOROUGH TO SHINE…

W

e’re used to chatting
to Neighbours stars first
thing in the morning,
due to the time
difference between
the UK and Australia – so when we’re
instructed to call Jodi Anasta (Elly) during
our lunch break, we know it must be a
pretty late hour over in Melbourne.
“It’s 10 o’clock here, but that’s okay,”
she tells us, when we wonder why she’s
working so late. “I’ve been doing 12-hour
days for the last little while – I’ve got
about eight different storylines all coming
to a head, so it’s been a really busy period.
But I’m absolutely loving it, especially
scenes we have in the Kennedy house
where we just film them
back-to-back. It’s a really
great time for Elly.”
We doubt Elly will
agree when she finds out
that her creepy ex, Finn
Kelly, is back in town! He
rocked up last week, as
the secret boyfriend of her
sister Beatrix. He’s clearly using Bea to
get to Elly – but right now, she’s blissfully
unaware that he’s even out of jail.
“No one thought that they would see
Finn Kelly again, let alone with Elly’s
little sister!” chuckles Jodi. “This is such
a brilliant storyline – having Finn around
is always a great addition to Neighbours.
I love working with Rob Mills, and I think
that he plays the character really well.
Finn is terrifying, creepy and cold – he’s
everything that the enemy should be.”
For the time being, Elly’s just delighted
to have her little sister in her life once
more, and is desperate to make up for all
the years she neglected Bea. But given how
strained their relationship has been in
recent times, it will take a lot of effort on
Elly’s part to get things back on track.

“Elly was obsessed with boys and
partying, so she didn’t have a lot of time
for her annoying little sister,” explains
Jodi. “Elly has no idea where Bea has been
or what she’s been doing – she doesn’t
even know that her sibling was homeless,
and that she felt abandoned. So as you
can imagine, there’s a lot of work to do
to rebuild that relationship.
“It’s been so exciting for me to have
Bonnie [Anderson, who plays Bea] come on
board,” adds the actress. “I love working
with her – it feels as though we really are
sisters now. We have a lot of the same
mannerisms, which is quite funny to see.”
Rumours are circulating that former
Home and Away star Debra Lawrance, who
played Pippa Ross, will
be playing Elly’s mum
Liz – but Jodi is staying
tight-lipped on any casting
announcements for now.
“You’ll definitely see Liz
soon,” she teases. “There’s
such a great energy on set
at the moment, we have
a real girls’ club going on. There are lots
of storylines to do with the relationships
between the women in Elly’s family –
Susan’s relationship with her
sister Liz, Liz’s relationship
“Get the Ell of me”:
with her daughters, and Elly’s
Finn left on bad terms
with his former flame
relationship with Bea. They’re
all really wonderful to explore.
“Susan and Elly have a special
relationship as well, so I’ve got
some huge stuff coming up with
Jackie Woodburne, who plays
Susan. She teaches me things
all the time, and pulls me up
when she thinks I can be better.
Jackie’s an incredible actress, so
I’m really grateful that I get the
chance to learn from her.”

HOLLYOAKS | Channel 4 THURSDAY

Misbah’s
MISERY

Hollyoaks’ Harvey Virdi talks
to us about Imran’s abuse…

I

t’s hard to admit when you’re
suffering violence at the
hands of someone you love
– especially when that person
is your own child. But Hollyoaks
star Harvey Virdi (Misbah) tells
us the misery Imran is inflicting
on his mum isn’t at all unusual…

What was your reaction when
you heard about this plot?
I was excited to explore it. I’d
been looking into it, and actually
started to realise it’s far more
common than I thought it would
be. But people are so scared and
ashamed to talk about it – so it
feels good doing this storyline.

Misbah has been suffering in
silence. Why is it so hard for
her to admit what’s going on?
It’s that thing of not wanting
to be judged – she doesn’t want
people to think she can’t handle
her own child. She
She’ss also afraid
of speaking out in case the police
or social services get involved.

What happens this
week with Imran’s
football match?

Misbah promises him she will be
there to watch his game – but after
he leaves, Yas starts to have chest
pains. Misbah is terrified and rushes
her to the hospital. She forgets
about Imran’s match, and he’s really
hurt when she doesn’t turn up.

And she later pays Buster to
keep Imran on the team…
She does! It comes from a good
place, but it’s a silly thing to do.
She doesn’t think Imran will find
out, but of course, he does. I was
trying to imagine how embarrassed
and angry I would be if my mother
did something like that to me!

The scenes between Imran
and Misbah are pretty brutal.
What are they like to ilm?
They can be intense, but we try to
make sure we have a laugh when
we’re not shooting. Ijaz [Rana,
who plays Imran] and I talk a lot
about,, ‘What would y
you do if this
was your mum’ and, ‘What would
your mum say in this situation?’.
Luckily, the Maaliks are all
close off screen – I feel as
if they’re my babies!
