THIS
WEEK!

CORONATION STREET | ITV MONDAY

Daniel learns
the terrible

TRUTH!
AS HE DISCOVERS HIS NEW WIFE HAS
CANCER, WILL SINEAD ACCEPT TREATMENT?

D

aniel’s world falls
apart around him
this week, when
he finds out that
his new bride
Sinead has cervical cancer.
And the devastated fella
has to face the prospect
of not only losing her, but
also their unborn child.
The bombshell drops after
Sinead passes out at the
factory, and on seeing the
commotion, Ken – the only
other person to know about
Sinead’s true condition –
insists on accompanying
her in the ambulance.
“Daniel is in his own little
bubble, and completely
unaware of what’s been
happening,”
sighs actor
Rob Mallard,
who plays
Sinead’s doting
husband.
“Although
Sinead has
been doing everything she can
to make sure he doesn’t find
out, he’s making it very easy
for her. I think he’s playing
out a fantasy in his head, and
he just doesn’t notice that
everything is going wrong.
He’s clearly not paying her
enough attention.”

Sinead begged Ken not
to tell Daniel – but he’s
left with no option

As Sinead is rushed to
hospital, Daniel has his mind
on preparing a nursery, blissfully
ignorant of the perilous situation
his wife and child are facing.
“He’s bought a big teddy
bear – even
bigger than
him – for the
nursery,”
reveals Rob.
“As he arrives
home, he sees
the ambulance
driving off, and when he
notices the way that Peter is
looking at him, he knows it
must be Sinead. At first, he
just thinks she’s fainted
because of the pregnancy
or
somethingOVER
– but↘there’s

a weirdness at the hospital.
Everyone seems to know a

little bit more than he does.
Then the doctor bursts the
bubble by mentioning her
illness, and it becomes clear
that Ken already knows…”
While Sinead undergoes
tests, Daniel asks Ken what’s
going on. At this point, Ken
realises that he can’t keep his
boy in the dark any longer,
and breaks the awful truth to
him about Sinead’s cancer.
“Daniel is shocked at first,
and then goes into denial,”
Rob tells us. “Then he finally
understands what has been
happening, and it’s like a cold
bath. He goes from one extreme
to the other – happiness
and optimism for the future,
to facing the possibility of
being a widower age 23.”

INSIDE SCOOP

As the true horror of the
information sinks in, Daniel’s
devastation turns to anger, as
he realises his dad has known
about Sinead’s condition for
quite some time, but kept the
news from him. It also brings
back unhappy memories of
how Ken played a vital part in
persuading Sinead to terminate
her previous pregnancy.
“Last year, after the abortion,
Daniel and Ken agreed that
there’d be no more secrets
between
them,” says
Rob. “They
said they would
tell each other
everything,
so this is an
echo of what
happened before. Daniel still
doesn’t really trust Ken. And
although Sinead comes across
as very sweet and innocent,
she’s also lied a lot to Daniel,
so he really struggles with this!”
The pain isn’t about to get
any easier for Daniel. When he
hears that Sinead has refused
to accept any treatment for the
cancer, fearing that it would
mean losing her baby, Daniel
is horrified. He begs his wife
to reconsider, but Sinead is
adamant that the life of their
child is more important,
and she refuses to put it
at unnecessary risk.

“Daniel has it out with
Sinead,” shares Rob. “For the
first time, the baby becomes
a foetus to him, rather than a
baby. He depersonalises it. He
tells Sinead that while she’s
trying to be a hero by throwing
her child to safety even if it
costs her life, he grew up
without a mum. He feels
that she’s not being brave
– he thinks it’s cruel to
bring a child into the world
if you’re not going to
be there to bring it up.
“Deep
down, Daniel
is furious, but
he can’t be
angry with
Sinead
because of
how he feels
about her,” adds the actor.
“Because that anger still has
to go somewhere, Daniel’s
rage redirects itself on Ken.”
Back home, Daniel vents
at his dad, before Peter steps
in to calm things down.
Daniel’s half-brother tries to
explain that while their father
has many faults, it isn’t fair
to blame him for the tragedy
of Sinead’s cancer, or for
agreeing to respect her wishes
by keeping it secret.
As Daniel starts to compose
himself, Peter encourages
his younger sibling to be the
better man and to stand by his

“It was like
doing a play!”
Star Rob tells us why he was delighted
to play these intense scenes…
Hi, Rob! This week sees
a whole episode of Corrie
devoted to Daniel inding
out about Sinead’s
cancer. How did you feel
when you heard that?
I was just
delighted! It
was a real vote
of confidence
– not only in
us, but in the
characters –
that the bosses

thought it could support a
whole half-hour episode. Also,
I love working with Chris
[Gascoyne, who plays Peter],
Bill [Roache, aka Ken] and Katie
[McGlynn, who plays Sinead].
It was like doing
a play! We had
a read-through
and rehearsals.
The pressure was
on, because in a
normal episode

wife, whatever she decides
she wants to do. Having
overheard the conversation
between his two sons, Ken
thanks Peter for talking sense,
and promises that he will
do everything he can to make
up for his past mistakes.
Meanwhile, Daniel returns to
the hospital to give Sinead
the support she needs…
“Daniel is more concerned
with Sinead’s wellbeing than
the baby’s,” admits Rob.
“However, he also has a
feeling of self-preservation. As
much as he is worried about
his wife, there is something in
the back of his mind saying,

‘How will I cope?’ He needs
her to survive so he doesn’t
have to go through that.”
As the week progresses,
viewers will see Daniel return
home with his weakened wife
after going ahead with her
first round of chemotherapy.
However, when the hospital
calls to let her know about her
next appointment, she says
she won’t be coming back!
How will Daniel react as

Sinead still keeping secrets
from him, but she’s refusing
to continue with the treatment

another storyline, but
this one is all on us. We had
a great time filming it.

The scene between Peter
and Daniel sees them
delve right back into the
past. How does it feel
to talk about things that
pre-date you even being
in the programme?
It’s great fun, because it has
weight to it. People who have
been watching the show for
many years will remember
all those things. Also, as an
actor, the interactions aren’t
as shallow, as there is that
entire history behind the
words you are saying. Even
though I wasn’t in it years
ago, the character was there,
so there are sections that
have real provenance, that
I can just play off.

Was it very diferent
to do so many scenes,
devoting a whole episode
to just the four of you?
It was like a workshop! To do
those scenes in the Barlows’
home, with two established
actors like Bill and Chris,
it felt like doing an acting
masterclass. I felt really
lucky. It was something
that made me take a sharp
intake of breath. It was very
challenging, and I got to flex
acting muscles that I don’t
necessarily use every day.

Charity surprises

We’re

EMMERDALE | ITV FRIDAY

A

ll hell breaks
loose this week,
as Charity and
Robert discover
that Ross
and Rebecca plan to
leave Emmerdale village
with their children in tow.
They go nuclear when they
discover that the traumatised
couple expect to take their
sons Moses and Seb away,
and a fight ensues. But while
Ross is determined to go no
matter what, Rebecca is torn.
That leads to some tough
decisions for them both.
,
“It gets very complicated,”
reveals Michael Parr, who
plays the Barton brother.
h
“Ross wants to have a fresh
start with Rebecca, and he
wants them to play happy
families. It’s a massive
opportunity for him to turn

m
No one could blame them
for wanting to escape, but
that doesn’t mean Robert or
Charity are going to let theirr
little boys be spirited away.
In particular, it turns out
that Ross has seriously
underestimated Moses’ mum.
“Ross thought that Charitty
es
would be willing to let Mose
go because she’s a bit of a
rubbish mum,” shares Michael.
“But she’s turned a corner

star. “But he definitely has

For five years, Ross Barton has been one
of the show’s best bad boys and a genuinely
compelling anti-hero. But for actor Michael Parr,
the time is right to try something new. How’s
he feeling about saying goodbye to the show?
“It’s a mixed bag of anxiety and happiness,”
he tells us. “There are other avenues I want
to explore, but I’m very sad. I feel like I’m
breaking up with Emmerdale, yet it’s the
right decision for me at this time in my life.”
Michael’s immediate plan involves jetting
Stateside and trying his luck in Hollywood.
“I’m in LA with my friend Adam Fielding [aka
Kirin Kotecha] – we’re going to try to live the
American dream until the money runs out,” he
laughs. “I’ve had the best five years of my life
at Emmerdale, and the opportunities this job
has given me have been amazing. So, I’m going
to take the plunge and be a desperate, on-thedole actor again for now. But hopefully I can
come back and do a bit more in the future.”

WILL TRACY’S HUSBAND
TURN HER IN FOR HER PART
IN THE CAR CRASH HORROR?

T

he truth behind
wicked Tracy’s
diabolical antics
comes out this
week, just as
Abi gives up all hope of
proving her innocence.
With the police blaming Abi
for meddling with Michelle’s
motor and causing the crash
that claimed Ronan’s life and
almost caused more fatalities,
Tracy knows she has to stay
silent. But
when husband
Steve comes
home and
accidentally
stumbles upon
the truth, it
looks as if Tracy
is about to test his
commitment to the vow
‘for better or worse’…
“Tracy blames Steve for all
of this,” explains our Corrie
insider. “She suspected he
was having an affair with Abi
and that’s why she sabotaged
Michelle’s car. It turns out Abi
wasn’t Steve’s fancy woman,
yet Tracy was right about him
doing the dirty. She’s been
busy making him pay for his
actions since he put a ring
on her finger – but now Tracy
needs to call in a big favour
from her cheating husband.”
She’s not willing to go down
for what happened, although
Tracy does have the good
grace to feel bad about Abi.
Her life has been destroyed
by the incident, not least
because she ended up
losing her job, too. Now Abi
is resigned to losing her
kids and putting the twins
up for adoption. Tracy
vows to help her, yet
there’s no real way to
turn things around for
devastated Abi that
doesn’t involve the
new Mrs McDonald

Meanwhile, Steve
arrives back in Weatherfield
to demand answers from his

wife. She left him without
his wallet or passport in the
middle of the desert while they
were on honeymoon, and now
Steve wants to know what
she’s thinking. Amy can’t
believe it when she hears the
mess her parents have made
of their second go at marriage,

Tracy for another chance. But
she’s got more to worry about

After a painful showdown,
Tracy decides she has to do

When Ronan’s mother Patti visits to ask that
Dr Ali talk her through her son’s final moments,
it’s too much for the medic to bear. Following
the meeting, Ali completely breaks down – and
during a drunken showdown with Robert, admits
that he was responsible for Ronan’s death.
Ali goes on to say that he wants to hand himself

Keegan plots
CAN CARMEL COME TO HIS AID BEFORE
HE MAKES A BIG MISTAKE?

K

eegan entertains
dark thoughts
of revenge as
Halloween night
arrives in Albert Square –
will Carmel be the person
who realises what’s going
on inside the lad’s head?
In the months since
his best friend Shakil was
murdered, Keegan has
struggled to come to terms
with what happened. His

Kush and Carmel are upset when
Shakil’s poster is damaged – but
ultimately decide not to report it

22 lnsideSoap

deep-rooted anger bubbles to
the surface again this week,
when someone defaces the
poster of his pal – which was
recently put on display by
Shakil’s mother, Carmel.
“Keegan is seething after he
sees what some vandal has
done to the poster,” reveals
our Walford informant. “It’s
painful enough that Shakil
is dead, but Keegan can’t
bear to think that someone
is insulting his memory like
this. He just wants to hunt
down the person responsible
and make them pay.”
However, when Keegan
informs Carmel about his

anger, she responds by telling
him to just forget about it. She
reasons that it’s kids messing
around, and it’s not worth
finding the culprit – making it
clear that she and son Kush
won’t be taking any action.
So Keegan goes it alone,
and tracks down the boy
responsible on social media.
“Keegan has all of this rage
inside of him,” sighs our spy.
“Once he discovers the
defacer’s
identity, he
joins in with
some trick-ortreating. He
obviously has
a plan in mind,
though – will
others work out that
he’s hiding something?”
When Bernadette and
Tiffany bump into him, Bernie
senses something strange
about Keegan’s behaviour,
and Carmel picks up on
similar vibes a little later on.
But with no clue as to his
plans, they’re powerless
to intervene. What they don’t
realise is that Keegan is
secretly sending messages to
his target, goading them to
agree to a meeting. And
when Keegan thinks
he’s spotted the guilty
youth, he starts to
follow him at a
discreet distance.

However, it soon becomes
clear that Keegan has
mistakenly followed the wrong
person – and he begins to
have doubts about his own
plot. He’s about to give up
altogether until he receives
another provocative message
from the vandal. Filled
with fresh fury, Keegan sets
off to meet the troll, intending
to teach him a lesson that
he will never forget…
“Keegan is
acting with
exactly the
same hotheadedness
that saw him
steal that
bicycle all
those months ago, leading to
Shakil’s death,” laments our
insider. “When he approaches
his target, all he can focus
on is the idea of making him
pay! Even after everything
Keegan has been through
since that awful night, he’s
really not learned anything.”
Back at the Vic, Carmel tells
Denise that she’s feeling
worried about Keegan – and
after the other Taylors turn up
at the pub without him, Carmel
senses something is terribly
wrong, so rushes to find him.
Can she manage to
track down the lad before
someone gets terribly hurt?
Tom Spilsbury

“All Keegan
can focus on is
making this
vandal pay!”

CARMEL’S
BIG DECISION
It’ll impact the whole community…

Carmel makes a big decision about her future this
week – has she resolved to leave Walford behind?
We’ve known for a while that star Bonnie
Langford will be leaving EastEnders before the
end of the year, with her character set to depart
after three hugely eventful years on the show.
Since Shakil’s death five months ago, we’ve seen
grieving Carmel launch a campaign against
knife crime, strike up an unlikely friendship with
Shakil’s killer’s mother, Sophie, and cope with
her son Kush’s handling of his bereavement.
After a recent run-in with a teenager at the
youth centre, Carmel decided to give up her
campaigning. So is it time for a whole new fresh
start for Carmel – far away from Albert Square?

Carmel finally realises
that something is
amiss with Keegan…

Denise does nothing
to curb her fears

Clearly not herself, Ruhma

But will the visit put her

We’d barely recovered from the Chas and
Paddy storyline in Emmerdale when Corrie

health plot. But every reader who has
written in is agreed on one fact…
KATIE McGLYNN IS
AMAZING! I’m in awe of her
performance in the episode

way the camera stayed on

LEY
WITH CAIN’S CONSCIENCE KILLING HIM, ACTOR JEFF HORDL
E…
ADMITS HIS TRAUMATISED ALTER EGO IS A MAN ON THE EDGE
EMMERDALE | ITV MONDAY

C

ain is not the person he
normally is – this is a
side of him we’ve never seen
before,” admits Jeff Hordley,
who plays Cain, as he talks
us through his character’s
current crisis. “His life is spiralling
out of control, and he’s on the back
foot, lost and upset. So the scene is set
for lots of great drama ahead…”
Cain is no stranger
to a dramatic situation,
but his mistaken belief
that he’s responsible
for killing his daughter
Debbie’s fiancé Joe has
blown his whole world
apart. Viewers know Joe
was actually struck down by
duplicitous Graham, yet as Cain continues
carrying the blame himself, he can hardly
cope. And as Jeff himself insists, while
Cain thought little of Joe’s treatment of
Debbie, he never intended for him to die.
“Cain just wanted to hurt Joe,” sighs
the actor, who is married to his Emmerdale
co-star, Zoe Henry (Rhona), with whom he
has two children. “Joe had mucked Debbie
around so many times already – and then
he left her at the altar. Cain saw how upset
Debbie was at that point, and he did say
that if he ever saw Joe again, he would kill
him. But it was just a figure of speech.”
So far, distraught Debbie remains
oblivious to her father’s role in Joe’s
sudden disappearance. Meanwhile,
cunning Graham continues to keep
his counsel, knowing that he has Cain
just where he wants him. But it’s a secret
poised to explode at any moment – and
we can’t wait for the showdown that’ll
surely ensue when it does!

“At the moment Graham holds all the
cards – and while I wouldn’t say that Cain
is intimidated by Graham, he’s a match
for him, that’s for sure,” muses Jeff.
“If this was a game of chess, then Graham
would definitely be looking like the likely
winner. But hopefully, a face-off is where
this is set to end up for the two of them.
“I love working with Andrew Scarborough
[aka Graham],” adds the actor. “He’s great
fun to be around, and we’re really enjoying
playing out these scenes. Is Graham
scarier than Cain? Ooh, that’s a tough
one… Perhaps it’d be a tie!”
Fortunately, Cain has at
least one person fighting
his corner, as he confesses
everything to his concerned
wife Moira this week. Any
worries that his sinister
secret will scupper their
marriage soon evaporate,
after Moira pledges her devoted support.
“Moira is brilliant,” reckons Jeff. “She’s
someone who’s been involved in a similar
situation, when Emma was killed. So she’s
a real pillar of strength for Cain, telling
him they’ll get through this together, that
she’ll be right by his side – exactly what

Cain did say
he’d kill Joe
– but it was
just a figure
of speech!

Guilty Graham: Will

Joe be unmasked?

Cain

AND ABLE
Why Graham’s latest nemesis is
not a man to be messed with…

WATCH OUT,
Sadie King!
After Cain rejected her, Sadie
paid for Jasmine Thomas –
who was carrying his baby
– to have an abortion. When
he found out, he kidnapped
Sadie and her father in law
Tom for ransom, then fled
the village with the cash.

DON’T LOOK NOW,
Nathan Wylde…
When Nathan Wylde framed
half-brother Ryan Lamb for
killing their father Mark, Cain
was paid to keep quiet. After
Nathan lied in court, Cain
kidnapped him, informing
his sister Maisie of his crime.
She called the police, and
Nathan went to jail.

BE CAREFUL,
Jai Sharma!
Jai accused Cain of stealing
from his parents, so Cain
used his sister Priya in a
plot to take revenge. Jai had
Cain arrested for blackmail,
so when he was later found
beaten, Cain falsely accused
Jai of attacking him.

When Cain found out
Debbie and Ross were
planning to run away, he
told his daughter that
Ross was the father of
her mum Charity’s son,
Moses, so Debbie carried
on with her marriage to
Ross’ brother, Pete…

TAKE HEED,
Gordon Livesy…
After Cain discovered
Gordon had raped son
Aaron as a child, he tied
him up, forcing him to drink
vodka and take sleeping
pills to stage a suicide
attempt. Aaron managed
to stop Cain, and then
reported his dad to police.

demons. But she doesn’t want to hurt her
sister Liberty, so she doesn’t get involved.

How does she feel when Liberty gives
her the green light to date Brody?
It’s a really sweet scene, actually. Liberty can
see that Sienna is trying to fight her feelings
for her sake, so she says to her, “Go for it,
I want you to be happy.” Sienna is very
excited – she runs off to ask him out!

Sienna also has her heart set
on becoming a teacher…
I know, and it’s hilarious! Of all the things
I thought Sienna would end up doing, it
wasn’t this. But I think she’d be a weirdly
cool teacher. Perhaps she doesn’t have
the most traditional methods, though…

She even breaks into the school
this week, to teach a class!
She just sees an opportunity and takes it.
Nancy’s off sick, and there’s no one to teach
the class. She thinks she’ll be a great teacher
if she just gets the chance to prove herself.
Sally busts her, and obviously sends her
packing. But then it’s actually Imran who
says, “Oh, is she coming back? She was a great
teacher!” Sally’s quite impressed by that.

Are you enjoying this new Sienna?
It’s so alien to me! It’s been a massive
learning curve, and the biggest challenge
has been trying not to lose her Sienna-ness,
because that’s why we all love this character.
She does get it a bit wrong – she goes about
things in weird ways and has a peculiar
motivation. She’s still fighting those demons.

How long do you think it will be before
she goes back to her old Sienna ways?
She’s giving it her best go – but we all know
what she’s like! Eventually I want her to
go back to that, because bad Sienna is my
favourite! But for now, I’m enjoying the break
– let’s see her be happy for a bit longer…

Neighbours star Kerry Armstrong
tells us how wicked Alice manages to
iniltrate the Rebecchi household…

T

he mysterious Alice Wells
moves into the Rebecchi
house this week as the
family’s nanny – and soon causes
even more trouble for the clan!
When Alice turned up out of
the blue, kindly offering to help
Sonya with Nell and Hugo, the
stressed mum hired her, thinking
she’d be the solution to all their
problems. Alice claims to be in
the neighbourhood dealing with
her deceased daughter’s estate –
but is she really who she says she
is? And who is her daughter?
“Alice knows what Sonya’s
weaknesses are, and she uses
those to her advantage,” explains
Kerry Armstrong, who plays the
newcomer. “There’s almost a
sociopathic side to Alice and she
doesn’t really see people as people
– she sees them as obstacles. The
directors, writers and I were kept
on our toes trying to work out
exactly how far she would go.”
Alice finds herself drawn
to little Hugo, and after her

wrongdoings, feels that she has to
confide in someone. Perhaps there’s
a scrap of goodness in her after all…
“She’s so sweet and wonderful to
him,” sighs Kerry. “It’s like Alice is
Mary Poppins in one instance and
then reveals all of her devious acts
to a small child in the kitchen. Then
she bakes shortbread, so it’s great!”
Alice is the latest in a long line of
villains to move into Ramsay Street,
and the actress tells us that she loves
finally getting to play someone bad.
“I just think she’s the most
wonderful character,” chuckles
Kerry. “She’s terribly evil, which
is a lot of fun to play. I was the
one who said to my agent, ‘I want
to play baddies this year’. Alice is
a terrible person. If she ever existed,
I’d run a mile. Or I’d lock her up
and throw away the key!”

“It’s about
time Fletch
had some
romance!”
AS HIS ALTER EGO REELS FROM
A SMOOCH WITH JAC, STAR ALEX
WALKINSHAW IS FEELING THE LOVE…
HOLBY CITY | BBC1 TUESDAY

G

ood news, Holby fans! The
wait is finally over, as this
week Jac and Fletch finally
address that they are obviously
smitten with one another!
It’s been a frustrating ride for viewers
waiting to see if they’ll ever get it on,
but star Alex Walkinshaw tells us that
a slow-burn was always the plan…
“It’s been on the cards for such a long
time – and that’s the beauty of these sorts
of stories,” he explains, as he joins us for
a chat. “It wouldn’t have worked if we’d
seen a flicker of something one Tuesday,
and then had them planning the rest of
their lives together the next. This way, all
the fans are really excited. It’s fantastic!”

Cheeky kiss: Fletch and
Jac’s slow-burn romance is
about to seriously heat up!

Copping of: Alex and Rosie
have history when it comes
to characters hooking up!

Although when does the course of
true love ever run smoothly in a longrunning drama? There’s no exception to
the rule for Jac and Fletch, who are barely
speaking following a passionate kiss.
“I think you have to admire Fletch’s
determination – if it’s right, he will go
for it,” shares Alex. “But Jac rejects him
and tells Fletch that it’s because he’s not
good enough! He is absolutely gutted.
“What we’ll come to learn from Jac is
that she really values Fletch as her friend,”
adds the actor. “She’s not inundated with
them and she doesn’t let people get close –
whereas Fletch has always had the ability
to cut through her bristle and hardness.
I think she’s worried a relationship will
ruin what they already have, and Fletch
is gallant in accepting that having part of
her is better than having none of her.”

We doubt that’s the end of the matter
– but in the meantime, Alex is enjoying
the change of pace for Fletch, who
between Jac and CEO Abigail Tate, has
had a love life to feel proud of this year.
“It’s about time!” laughs the 44-year-old,
who enjoyed popular roles in The Bill and
Waterloo Road, before his Casualty character
Fletch made the move upstairs to Holby.
“For years, Fletch’s love life has been a
barren waste ground. It’s nice that he’s
getting a bit of attention from the ladies!”
Of course, this isn’t the first time that
Alex and co-star Rosie Marcel, who plays
Jac, have been paired up romantically
on-screen. They were once doomed lovers
Smithy and Louise Larson in The Bill…
“This time we’re older and have more
wrinkles!” chuckles Alex, who in real
life has two children with wife Sarah.

DADDY
COOL!
Alex and TV father Jesse
Birdsall go back years…

It’s not just the ladies
in his life who have
given Fletch jip
recently – his
dad Steven has
been trouble,
too! However,
Alex cannot

Eldorado star Jesse

“It’s been such a blast,”
grins Alex. “We actually
worked together 25 years
ago. I did an episode of
crime series Anna Lee
with him. I hadn’t seen him
since, but straight away
we got chatting after
he rocked up on Holby.

“When we found out that our Holby City
characters might get it on, myself and
Rosie thought it was very funny. We’ve
known each other for a really long
time, and on set I’m probably the
person who gives her the most grief.
It makes the day go quicker!”
It’s thanks to Fletch’s
promotion to Director Of
Nursing that he ended up
on Jac’s ward in the first
place – a change that has
its pros and cons, says Alex.
“I do miss wearing the
scrubs, aka my pyjamas,
every day,” he confesses. “I’m not
necessarily a suit-and-tie-wearer myself,
but I think that it works for Fletch.
And now he can get away with calling
himself ‘The Don’ which of course

stands for Director Of Nursing. No
one actually calls me that, mind!”
Fletch’s work obligations are set to be
the least of his worries soon, as Gaskell’s
story races to a thrilling climax, and Jac
learns her life is at risk again. Could the
knowledge that she might
die force her to re-assess
her future with Fletch?
“In those episodes, people
are coming at Jac’s situation
from different angles
medically – but Fletch is
completely emotional about
it,” reveals Alex. “So yes,
big questions need to be asked and they
require big answers. I think it’ll be quite
obvious how Fletch feels at that point, so
we’ll have to wait and see from Jac…”

ISSUES young!
Please forgive us the indulgence while we celebrate a special
landmark for Inside Soap, as we tell the story of what it takes to
put a magazine together – from soap stars to loyal readers…

I think Sharon has always been
stuck in a bit of a timewarp!
Letitia Dean, Actress
What’s this? Sharon has fallen for the charms
of the most inapproriate man in Walford?
here’s a saying – “The more
things change, the more they
stay the same.” It’s a maxim
that’s especially true for Inside Soap
– and doubly so for Sharon Mitchell!
Sharon was the co-star of Inside
Soap’s first cover, as she fell under the
spell of her husband Grant’s mechanic
brother, Phil. As the ‘Sharongate’
tape would tell it: “One minute I was
looking at ’im, the next, we were
rippin’ each other’s clothes off.”
Now, 999 issues later, Sharon
is back on the cover with another
shaven-headed hunk – 19-year-old
mechanic Keanu – and this time
it’s Phil who she’s cheating on!
“The great thing about Sharon is
that she never really changes, does
she?” laughs star Letitia Dean. “You
meet people like her, who are stuck
in a bit of a timewarp! I’m fortunate

T

that the EastEnders writers know
her so well. There’s so much
history, and they know how
the loose ends of her character
can be drawn together.”
Danny Walters, who plays
Keanu, is equally amused
by the irony of the situation.
“We can safely say Sharon
has a type when it comes to
men!” he chuckles. “After Phil
and Grant, I’m following in
some amazing footsteps.”
While there’s big drama
ahead, Letitia has always
been sure of her character’s
talent for survival.
“Sharon is like a phoenix!”
she grins. “She always
rises from the ashes!”
We’ll see you on issue
2000 then, Letitia!

ISSUES young!
o bring you the gossip
in Inside Soap, we
have to be inside the
soaps! That wouldn’t be
possible without the help of
our friends in the soap press
offices, whom we work with
daily – fishing for spoilers,
arranging interviews and
organising photo shoots. So
who better to explain how that
works than Corrie’s chief
publicist, Alison Sinclair,
who has been working
on the cobbles for almost
the same time that
Inside Soap has been
on the news stand…

T

Hi, Alison! For our
readers that don’t
know, what does
your job involve?
I am the chief publicity
manager for Coronation
Street. I head up a team of
three people who look after
all the press and publicity for
the show – everything from
setting up interviews, putting
cast members on television
programmes, and also crisis
management. That’s if the
press want to talk about issues
within the show or sometimes
the actors’ private lives.

How long have you been
doing that for now?

If we’re not

what we’re
doing wrong!
Alison Sinclair, Publicist
It’s been 25 years! I started in
1993, a year after Inside Soap
launched. Your magazine was
– and still is – a great way of
gauging how the fans see
Corrie. Real soap fans buy your
mag, so if we haven’t made
your cover for a while, we
think, ‘Why is that? Is that
because they don’t believe our
fans are engaged, or not?’ So
it is important. You’re a bit
like an industry magazine, as
you’re the only one focusing

on what’s happening in soaps.
I also like it because I don’t
have time to watch them all,
so I can catch up with what’s
happening in the other ones!

We’ve worked with your
team for some great photo
shoots. Do you have a fave?
I remember the huge cast
shoot that you did for our 50th
birthday. It captured the whole
feel of the anniversary and
was such a celebration – even

though we had a tram come
crashing off the viaduct!
I have to say that even those
cast members who only do
minimum press will always do
Inside Soap. You’re very friendly,
there is no agenda – and most
of all, they trust that you’re
going to write it as they say it.

Corrie launched the careers
of huge stars, all of whom
have appeared in our
magazine. Does it make
you proud?

WORDS: LAURA-JAYNE TYLER, ALLISON JONES

Absolutely. I saw
Michelle Keegan

awards ceremony
recently, and
I always tell her
how proud I am of
her, as I knew her
when she was just
starting out. And
people are always
happy to chat as
they tell us a lot
